XP pro install w/no spk2 question

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have been doing nothing but reading and studying these forums preparing for my new DFI build....must say I am shaking in my boots...so worried I will screw up it's sick. In one of angrys posts there is mention of adding service pack 2 prior to installing windows XP if it's not already on the disc.....I'm a total noob and he totally lost me... I read it and read it and I still didn't get it..... Basically, do I have to do this? I have a copy of XP home with a factory ser # and sp2 but don't really wanna use the liscense or the Home version for that matter.

Secondly, what would happen If I just transplanted the hard drive without re-installing windows....can this be done or not?

Thanks for any help.

I do know that more than 99% of the time you will have to do a clean install. I tryed it and it failed. Windows will not work like that and also you would want to do a clean install any how just to ensure you dont have any bugs from old system and that it reconizes all your new parts and MOBO.

As for the SP2 thread I have looked at that many times myself and Im lost too. I would just make sure that the copy of windows has it then you wont have to worry about it. Im a noob too but I didn't chance it myself.

Good luck with your build! It was really fun for me and you will enjoy it too. In fact I want to build another as soon as my cash supply returns.

Using utilities such as nLite and AutoStreamer, you can combine older Windows installation media (for instance, XP or XP-SP1 discs) with the newest Windows updates (SP2 is the important one). It is highly recommended for nF4 to use a SP2 disk.

You can move HD's between computers and use the recovery installation feature of Windows, but you must have a media with at least the same SP level as your installation (so if you have SP2 installed, you need an SP2 disk to recover). This will essentially re-install Windows based on your new hardware configuration. There is also a more official way to do it, and I think there is a post on it in one of A_G's important info stickies. Clean installation seems to be the most preferred way in the end, however.

Listen I managed to get mine PC up running stable on Win2k that didn't even have SP4. I later upgraded to XP, then installed SP2. Would it make your life easier if you had an nice fresh slipstreamed disk? Yes. But there is NO reason why you can't install XP then install SP2 later.

Since I am so totally confused about how to "slipstream" that would make my life much easier as I feel like I have already bitten off more than I can chew.

Million dollar question would be why angry wants it done.....

because SP2 is important for all of the security as well as OS updates, and there's absolutely ZERO reason not to have it now that ALL software (software that is still decent and being updated anyway) works with SP2.

if your software doesn't work with SP2, I suggest moving to some different software as SP2 is not something I would just scoff at and say 'poooo...I don't need this' like some people here will tell you...
