Igniseus Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 My current DFI (NF4 INFINITY) motherboard has become broken so i need to get a new motherboard, and i was thinking about getting the LANPARTY UT NF4 SLI-DR Expert. Will i need to re-format and re-install windows with this upgrade? current: http://us.dfi.com.tw/Product/xx_product_sp...TYPE=LP&SITE=US possible upgrade: http://us.dfi.com.tw/Product/xx_product_sp...ID=3872&SITE=US If i do have to re-install, will getting the same MB again work? As in no loss of performance or anything. The chipset seems to be the same, except the possible upgrade is the SLI version. I dont have an nVidia graphics card, but there doesnt seem to be a non-SLI version with the same feature set. And the only other MB that i would upgrade to is the new ASN32-SLI or something, which also only comes in SLI as far as im aware. Its such a shame the 2 best MB's (IMO) only come in SLI flavour. Igniseus Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 I've reinstalled windows 3 times over the last month...i REALLY do NOT want to reinstall again...why would you reinstall even with the same MB? Windows wont even realise its been swapped? Thanks

Just upgrading BIOS's killed my last Windows installation. Linux, on the other hand, especially with a modular kernel, can breeze across any hardware. focalboy Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 I upgraded from an NF4 Infinity SLI to an NF4 Ultra-D which I then modded to SLI. I de-installed the audio drivers for the Infinity, but left everything else the same. I placed the USB mouse and keyboard in the same coresponding jacks under the LAN port. (LAN 1 on the Ultra-D) I don't even recall Windows identifying/installing new hardware. I will note this; I had only used the Infinity for 2 1/2 months, so it was not loaded up with alot of extra software and old registry entrys. I am using XP 64, but it should'nt matter. The Safe way to do it, and the perhaps the company line would be a fresh install. Back up anything that you can't afford to lose and try it. BTW the infinity overclocks very well despite the stripped down bios, my current OC is only slightly better.

Are you also using SATA drives? If i do it, and it works, is there any particular test you would recommend to benchmark my pc before and after to see if the MB swap decreased performance? Thanks EDIT: Will the "LANPARTY UT NF4 SLI-DR Expert" detect my RAM settings correctly as my Corsair 3500LL Pro was set to very slow timings on my current motherboard. I maged to set the timings and clock speed correctly, but when i set the command rate to 1T as it should be, it wouldnt boot and beeped to say theres a memory problem. Apparently the new A8N32-SLI or whatever it is will pick up the correct settigns of the SPD or whatever it is called, why don't all other motherboards do this? Sparky69 Posted February 3, 2006 Posted February 3, 2006 You don't need to reinstall windows, you just need to repair them! All your settings and programs stays intact.
Igniseus Posted February 3, 2006 Posted February 3, 2006 Doesnt repairing windows wipe your registry or something? And i also heard you cant repair windows as the option isnt on the x64 install disc.
