Just got DFI Ultra B, can't make any changes in BIOS w/o corruption

This is crazy, I've read about the 4 LED's of death... always heard how picky these boards are...

but OMG... everytime I can get the damn thing to boot into the BIOS... it doesn't matter what I do... load defaults, fails safe or make a manual change... I press F10 or save and exit and that's it... the monitor goes black, goes on standby and that's it... I've reflashed the BIOS like 5 damn times... this is getting old really quick...

any ideas?

lemme update my sig..

I would actually pull the bios chip out...Jumper the cmos and pull the battery and ATX plug....give the board a good long clear.....Also I'd get another bios chip...that one may be sketchy....you can contact DFI and they will send you one or you can PM Tmod and buy one from him with any flavor you want on it....

Also test the ram in another rig....make sure it's not erroring....when you put it back together only use 1 stick of ram....

That crappy thing is I've already done all that...

I have a total of 4 BIOS chips... I've used different RAM... ALL tested in different RIGS... I can get the board to boot... the whole DFI clear CMOS jumper ritual sucks and is getting old... I understand that may need to be done once in a while... but everytime I make any change in the BIOS... ridiculous...

The problem as I see it is when the DFI tries to save ANY change in the BIOS....

so I said screw this... I'm booting to windows.... well... cant to that either... after the post screen it just sits there with a black screen, monitor is engaged and there is a flashing cursor up in the corner...

I can't even get to memtest86+ from the floppy or the DFI BIOS Flash floppy either =(

man this is horrible... I hate to admit I've had nothing but BAD BAD BAD experiences with DFI... I know they must be great... right... everyone says so?

Is that a new board? If Dr-bowtie's suggestion doesn't work you may need to RMA the board.(You can for 3yrs-us 2-yrs europe) Sounds like maybe sumpin' on the board is borked. New bios chip best bet, after that rma.

Edit: I've been fightin' w/ a borked D-C controller for the past months (Didn't know it though.(Used board))

OCZ plat. rev. 2 (2 x 512MB) TCC5 @ 2.5-2-2-11

Are these the timings it defaults to? Isn't this the 2-2-2-5 stuff?

So..... it doesn't matter what you put in.... it ALWAYS gives 4 leds of death when you try to save it?

Do you have the L12 mod on your mobile?

Have you tried it with one stick of ram and cas 2?

Hey Darien,

Regarding the hotflash make sure you follow this procedure:

http://www.ocforums.com/archive/index.php/t-314300.html

*Note. You will also need the /QI switch. Read more here: http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1003*

Also I would recommend what somone posted earlier regarding the long clear cmos trick. In which you leave the clear cmos jumper on and remove the battery. I have had success with doing this for 15 minutes on other makes but occassionaly overnight may clear it up.

Usually this is only with the 4leds right off the bat and not with save/reboot. Also make sure when you clear the cmos no power is being applied to the motherboard. Usually turn off or pull the power on the Power Supply and wait for the led's to drain the power.

Keep in touch.

I should remove that... the RAM timings are whatever it defaults to... I'm only using one stick right now in slot 3 (farthest from the cpu) and I've been following the instructions and I just load defaults, save and exit... after many times of that not working I tried other changes in the BIOS... doesn't matter what I do.. if I try to save anything from the BIOS when I exit I get 4 LED's of death.

OK...

very cool... very informative... i learned something there...

OK my 2 dedicated DFI chips are :

1. WINBOND W39V040AP

2. SST 49LF040

the link here http://users.keyway.net/~tmod700/BiosSavio...hip%20chart.htm

says WINBOND W39V040AP and SST 49LF040A are compatable - would need BIOS Savior PMC4... note it said SST 49LF040A and I have SST 49LF040... I don't think that matters any... since the problem is the same with either chip 1 or 2.

I'm have to flash using my Abit NF2 board which uses a BIOS chip Identical to DFI chip 1. WINBOND W39V040AP

This 'should' work... but I've tried flashing from DFI boot floppy, DOS AWDFLASH.EXE, ABIT windows BIOS flasher and Winflash.exe.... every one of these programs except winflash won't allow me to flash because it says the BIOS in not compatable with my abit mobo... (DUH!)... and with winflash it gives me a warning....

All I can figure is that because I'm hot flashing on an Abit with winflash.exe it may be doing a less than perfect flash that won't allow any save changes.... ofcourse that still doesn't explain why I cant boot to windows or a floppy with the default settings?

I've burned Tmods Flashing CD6.5 and want to try that... If I could get a flash from a DFI board if just might work... but that's been the problem.. I can't get my DFI to even boot from a floppy.

Hey Darien,

So if after clearing the cmos hit the "f1" to continue, when prompted regarding defaults loaded, it will not boot to floppy? I'm assuming it just halts at saving cmos or something? Or is it after clearing you still receive the 4leds and no boot?

Sorry allot of information here to follow.

Also I would set the memory timings manually if possible. I noticed on another board, an infinity, the memory timings would show up as something really tight, example 1,3,1,5, when the defaults were loaded.

The settings for starters should be:

11

3

3

2 or 2.5

If you can get to the cmos, set timings, save cmos, reboot, and receive the 4leds you either have the memory or cpu set incorrectly from my experience..

However, like I mentioned I have seen the defaults enter the wrong information as well.

Flash BIOS, get to post screen... have the option to F1 to continue or Del to go to BIOS config...

F1 -> Black Screen, Monitor Green light, flashing cursor in upper left hand side, no drives spinning, just stays that way. When I restart 4 LED's of Death and Monitor yellow light.

Del -> Goes to BIOS, no matter what I do, when I leave, comp restarts 4 LED's of Death and Monitor yellow light.

And how the heck do I use Tmod's BIOS CD6.5!??!?!?

Is it a boot disc, I can't boot from CD with it no matter what computer I use it on.. there is no .exe file on it, I can't run it from windows... there is only 1 bin... he has a very indepth tutorial on how to burn the ISO... but WTH am I supposed to do with it once I burn it!?!?!

so confused... totally frustrated.

How about the memory timings? Definitely a weird issue.

default sets them to optimal i believe... but they are 2-2-2-5 when I go into the bios.
