BF2 random CTD?

I was playing some BF2 last night. Played for about 3 hours (12-3pm), then it just crashes to desktop. no error message, no warnings, just CTD (gpu temp was around 78*c on 2nd gpu, and 75*c on 1st gpu). I figured that it was an overheating problem, when i played again later on that night, i played for about 2 hours and it did the same thing (5-7pm) (this time, temps were around 73*c on 1st gpu, and 75*c on the second gpu). thinking the same exact thing was happening, i took a desk fan, and put it right on the SLI'd 7800gtx (about 6 inches away, on high fan speed), and it dropped the cards to around 68*c on the top card and around 70*c on the bottom card. it didnt crash to desktop this time and I think i solved the problem..but a new problem occured...it froze, and i had to reset the comp.

CPU temp never went above 42*c, chipset hit max of 50*c, and PWMIC was approx 48*c (dont remember this figure exactly).

since i think the problem isnt that it was overheating, what else could it be? I'm running 81.94 drivers WHQL from nvidia's website.

*NOTE* I was running it using both cores. I will try to run it tonight with just one core for BF2 and see what happens.

TYIA..

im not too sure about dual core cpu's but i have heard about problems trying to use both cores to run games. if noone else solves the problem let us know how running it on 1 core goes for you tonight.

Is your system overclocked ?

BF2 is a very demanding game.. Even if your running stock it could be one timings that is too tight .. Ive been able to run prime and memtest for 8+ hours and have BF2 crash.. Then changing a few timings made it all better..

the official is 81.98 now. but i highly suggest 82.12. altho im currently trying 83.40 and it seems a tad better than 82.12.

also, BF2 will crash on the slightest overheat. trust me, i got 3 kind of hardware setup playing BF2 for 500+hours :P

having 70+C on a VGA core WILL crash/freeze BF2.

having 50+ on CPU core WILL crash BF2.

having any errors on memtest under 8 hours WILL crash BF2.

my last config is the same. primed no problem for 8.5hrs. OCCT pass. Superpi with ease. 3dmark06/05 demo and bench no problem with no artifact watsoever.

played BF2, click on the join button, BOOM. BSOD.

drop 2Mhz from the overclock. click join button, freeze.

tried again to convince myself while swearing extensively, no luck. still freeze when the game finish loading and the round starts loading on the GPU to play.

drop another Mhz. then i got it running.

eat that. lol. now im back at my OCDB result. i was up to 315Mhz prime stable, but not BF2 stable, so i didnt update my entry.

edit: i dunno bout PWMIC, but chipset 50 also freeze BF2 in my experience. gotta drop the chipset volt from 1.7 to 1.6, now it loads on 46ish and now i can play just fine ;)

I have ran the following tests in the past few days..and here are the results:

Dual Prime, 100% load, 900mb ram use (custom settings as per AG), stable for 8 hours, 30 minutes, no errors.

Memtest 86+ v1.65:

Full tests, 8 hours, no errors

Test 5, 2 hours (46 passes) no errors.

also, in memtest it shows my ram as 200mhz (DDR401) and the timings are 3-4-3-7. these are the stock timings, but not at the stock speed of DDR500. in order for me to get them running at DDR 500 i need to overclock them..im assuming that is correct?

*NOTE* nothing is overclocked. everything is currently running at stock speeds.

I have yet to test BF2 on one core, and I am about to start playing it..results in a a few hours..

*UPDATE*

I just played BF2, both dual core, and on one core. it felt exactly the same to me. only this time no crashes or anything ..on either setting. I have the fan blowing on the chipset/gpu, so that made a difference IMO..further testing will be done.

i tried out the new 83.40 drivers, and it gives me the multi-color trees...im thinking of switching back to 81.94..ran everything with no problems...other then the horrible connection in games due to my wireless connection, everything seems to be running fine..got my vc-re today, get my hitachis tomorrow and the stacker...cant wait.

BF2 is an awesome game! unfortunately it will crash at the first sign of instability. one other thing of note- i've noticed crashing sometimes when a server quits in game too. rather than display the "you have lost the server" message, it will CTD. so connectivity is also important to the game crashing. if you're having issues with a wireless device that might be enough to do it. just a thought.......
