goldfires Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 Hmmm... so I've been thinking about overhaulin my pc. ditching the ati card (x850 xt), going SLI (2x 7800 GT's), getting a 2gb ocz kit of ram, and watercooling the pc. Concern? my 3500+ new castle... one area i dont know much about... cpu's and unlockable multipliers... can i only increase my system bus? or can i play with the multiplier as well? im guess the answer is no, and that i'll need to buy an fx series cpu to be able to push some DDR600 modules to it's full potential? Someone with knowledge plz fill me in. Thanks, Goldfires.
red930 Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 ...i'll need to buy an fx series cpu to be able to push some DDR600 modules to it's full potential? FX series are the only completely unlocked AMD's, though of course lower multipliers are available on all the other processors. Quite honestly you don't need to have an FX to max out your RAM. 10x is available on most every processor, so right there you have DDR600 and 3.0GHz. Depending on the CPU you could even have 11 or 12x to ease the burden on your memory if it can't handle the speeds. Even if you don't have a higher multi than 10x you can always use a divider to stabilize your ram. So the answer in short is no, most AMD CPU's should be able to get your RAM to DDR600 just fine. However, good luck getting 2GB there.

"OCZ has once again managed to impress me with their offerings. Bringing back Samsung TCCD chips really says a lot about their commitment to the hardware enthusiast community...If you want to run 300 Mhz+ @ 1:1 with guaranteed TCCD chips, look no further than the Elite DDR Kit. OCIA.net has awarded the OCZ Platinum EL PC-4800 Elite Dual Channel DDR Kit our seal of approval." FYI, I have the 3500+ (new castle, which oc's just fine, to my knowledge. i read reviews on my cpu and oc'ing). Another concern is my mobo. Asus A8N-SLI Deleuxe. Is it able to provide voltages high enough for oc'ing?
goldfires Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 Another question. You mentioned something about a memory divider... I don't know much about that. Is that the ratio between your system bus and the frequency of your ram?
red930 Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 What about these modules... http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memo...m_elite_edition Well first off I have to recommend a Lanparty for any overclocking. But the ASUS should do okay, I used a deluxe when building a friend's computer and it worked just fine. That ram appears to be a 2x512 kit, and getting 4 sticks of ANYTHING to run at DDR600 is probably next to impossible, especially since the timings are already loose. It has nothing to do with the ram itself at that point, it just the the memory controller on the cpu can't handle all 4. Best thing to do would be get a 2x1GB kit of DDR500 and get around 270 maybe more. And yeah, the divider is exactly that. If I'm using a 1/2 divider and the FSB is set to 300 then the ram is going at 150. Just another way to increase your cpu without increasing your ram if it can't handle it. Whoops. i posted the wrong URL. I had the 2x1gig kit in mind. and yeah, thats what my friend recommended (going with the pc4000). you figure the tighter timings would make up for the extra mhz?
