air cooling for naked CPU

case

Recommended Posts

Ive got a spare X2 3800+ and i plan to remove the IHS and I am curious to what people think the best bolt thu heatsink for a naked CPU is. Ive heard the Thermalright SLK-948U is decent but cant find it in the UK. Ive also heard good things about the zalman 9500 but am worried about the weight of the heatsink.

What would you recommend?

I hear good things about the zalman heatsinks. I'd do your research though... read reviews...

err.. i own one look at my sig.

This heatsink uses clips to attach to the motherboard and Ive heard that this can be danderous with an naked CPU as u are at more risk of damaging the chip

PS its a great heatsink, I lost about 10c at full load compared to the stock heatsink

lol. my bad. I'm super tired and should be in bed now. 10c drop is great considering its air cooled though. If I do decided to abandon water cooling my rig, i think im going to buy one of these.

also, what do you mean by "naked cpu"?

read that thread. educated myself a bit and learned about the IHS, benefits from removing it, and the diff between a clip-on and bolt-on heatsink. Thanks again guys.

If I make another n00b comment like the last couple, feel free to reach through your monitor and give me a virtual slap to the cheekbone. hahaha, im out. g'night.

Hmm, i can run my 4000 @ 2750 with temps staying below 45c on stock HSF

I now use a gigabite pro and it stays around 38c witch is cool enough for me, @ the end of the day if AMD needed to be cooler than this then wouldn't they do something about it? in other words be happy with anything that stays below 50c as this is good in my book!

Yeah that heatsink looks ideal, only problem is I cant find it for sale anywhere and its been taken off thermalright's website so i assume they've stopped making it. know any other alternatives?

This could be the excuse I need to finally get watercooling

if only it wasn't so v expensive
