RAID 0 to RAID 5

Recommended Posts

Hello, recently morphed a raid 0 (2 IDE) to raid 5 (3 ide)... and not sure if all ok?

Quick and Dirty... Looking for a utility to make sure my raid array is really set up for raid 5... and not just raid 0.

Story...

I have been running DFI Lanparty UT Ultra-D using RAID 0 successfuly for a while now. I had 2 WD 160GB IDE drives with decent performance. But, after a few scares with overclocking, I decided to add another disk so I could get some data protection.

I attached a Maxtor 160GB HD and in BIOS, I set it to enable for RAID.

I then looked at the raid setup using f10 just after bios... but did not see anything useful that would allow me to KEEP my existing data.

So, instead, I opted for NVRAIDMAN.EXE that I found in Windows/system32 dir.

It showed the WD drives in a raid Striping config. and the Maxtor below them as a "FREE DISK"

UNDER "SYSTEM TOOLS" it had the option of CREATE ARRAY... so I figured what the heck... and chose create array.

NVRAIDMAN then allowed me to choose RAID 5.

(RAID 5 stripes both data and parity information across three or more drives)

And since I only had 3 drives ... this is perfect.

Ok... so wammo... I said yes... it does its thing... and then next thing I see:

NAME STATUS

STRIPING

WD1 healthy

WD2 healthy

Maxtor healthy

So, I assume all is OK...

BUT...

Why does NVRAIDMAN show the 3 disk array as striping? and not raid5 or something?

And I also noted that there was no "copying" of old data to the new added drive...

It was just up and running immediately...

So, is there a Utility to really understand how my NVIDIA RAID array has been setup? (I just want to confirm the status of raid 5 rather than simply striping.)

Thanks.

MACK

Thanks for the updated Nvidia RAID Manual... I did the quick read... and for RAID-5, the manual does show RAID-5 as the type of RAID... But in my system it is shown as striping.

Even tho I chose raid 5.

I don't suppose there is a way to convert this from a 3 disk striping array to a 3 disk raid-5 array? (Arg...)
