Overclocking PCI Express Bus helps performance?

Recommended Posts

I have heard of several people rasing their PCIe bus to 102 or 103 and gaining several hundred points in 3dmark05. Is their any credibility to this? I tried it and I noticed no difference in my scores.

It's the speed of the bus from the PCIe graphics card. Normally its 2500 mhz (100x25). By increasing the bus by only 1 mhz you are actually increasing the speed by 25 mhz, so 101 x 25 = 2525. The reason most people leave it at 100 is that the speed is never even close to being used. Theoretically, there shouldn't be any perfromance gain by OCing the PCIe bus, but some people claim it does help. It didn't do anything for me so mine's still at 100.

No not an extra 2500mhz, its an extra 25 for each mhz you raise the bus (because its a 25x multi). The reason it has little or no effect is because it's really a question of bandwith, and a pci express x16 slot provides more than enough bandwith. That's why it doesn't make sense for people to gain hundreds of points in 3dmark by raising the bus.
