I can't get my gig! Pleeeeese help!

Recommended Posts

Amazing- problem solved! In the end it was so simple.

I left just 2 RAM modules in (which has being causing no probs)- the 512 and a 256 and changed over the fsb from 266MHz to 333MHz and it booted up fine- unlike when I first installed the cpu. So it was now being registered as a 2800+ and get up to 2.08G.

Then I changed the DDR DRAM clock setting in BIOS from 266MHz to 400MHz. This caused it to restart just after the windows loading screen. So back into BIOS and drop it down a setting to 333MHz. Same result. Then back to BIOS again and dropped it to 266MHz which was what it was originally so I stuck the third RAM modules in and bingo! I got my gig.

So where to now- do I need to check memory timings, settings, etc. to ensure Im getting best performance for the system. Any suggestions of what and how would be good.

And a big thanks to those who helped out. I really appreciate the info, tips, etc. I'm sure I'll be back with a few more tech probs and hopefully one day, may even be able to help someone out too. Cheers

The Cpu doesn't make sence to me....If it's a Athlon 2200 it's either a palamino core or a thouroughbred core....for a 266fsb...

If it's a 333fsb 2200 cpu it could be a barton core... or a Thorton core then it would be a Sempron (AMD Sempron 2200)....

You'll want to make exactly sure what you have for a cpu...it will make a big diference when trying to trouble shoot problems...

Yeah well thanks for the input mate- it's been real helpful. I can't actually recall you even trying to assist with the troubleshooting 'til now.

So I put the wrong specs in. I said I need to update the info if you bothered to read a few previous posts. I also mentioned in a previous post that it was a 2800+ Barton rated as a 2200. Some of the more helpful blokes seemed to understand. And I am certain its 266fsb- I was just looking at it. May need to do some more research my friend.

Hey, nice to see you've made some progress with your rig.

Also, thanks for the appreciation. ;)

If you seem to be running better now, then you might want

run some memory testing programs first. That way you can

see if the timings/settings you have set currently are doing

the job for you.

Here's a couple of links to some RAM/Memory testing utilities -

Memtest86 (usually run off a floppy disk) - http://www.memtest86.com/

S&M (Windows environment testing utility) - http://www.testmem.nm.ru/snm.htm

Just to throw out some additional and potential info, I think

a 2800+ CPU is going to be a 2.2GHz 200MHz/400DDR part,

and with 256K of L2 cache, which would make it an Athlon XP

Thoroughbred CPU. Or a 2.083GHz CPU with a 166MHz/

333DDR FSB and also an L2 cache of 512K, which would be a

Athlon XP Barton CPU. Or possibly something else and a newer

variant of the A-XP CPUs, such as a Thorton CPU with 256K of

L2 cache, or a Sempron and/or other.

You might want to pin down which CPU you have. That way it

would be easier to know what the stock configuration and some

of the other settings that might be best for it are. That's up to

you though, and was just more of a thought along the lines that

if you ever want to attempt to OC or modify settings then it would

be easier to have a better idea of what you'd be setting in your

BIOS, as well as what your CPU and so on would like to run with.

Best to you.
