Just starting to overclock this board...

Recommended Posts

And holy crap, does the myriad of options ever have me confused. Specifically, memory timings have me scratching my head a bit. I've got some options here that I've not even really seen before.

Does anybody have any advice (or more easier...) any links to good guides for any of the components that I've got listed in my sig?

Aside from a stable 225 mhz bus OC, it looks like there's a bit more that I need to learn about timings and the limitations of my memory.

Thanks for any replies guys.

First of all, thanks a lot guys for the quick responses, it's definitely appreciated, and I have made great use of all of the links.

The overclock database is pretty useful... the only thing that could make it better would be you were able to select specific components (a java app, or something like that) and see what people were able to get, as opposed to using find in a browser window for only 1 search term, but hey, I'm sure the site will get to that maybe one day.

Well, it looks like my results concur about the max ram o/c fsb. In order to get myself up to a 265 bus, I had to down clock to 5:6 (166)MHz for the ram, which gives it about 221 final speed.

Seeing now that my ram is able to maintain at that divider, I'm going to give it another shot at upping the FSB some more... I'm just using the standard boxed heatsink and fan, but it seems to be doing the job, for now anyway. Looks like some people are able to hit 2.8 with the 4400 x2, so I'm going to shoot for that.

Yeah, flashing the bios sucks. I was looking through my everest report, and it said that the bios was quite old, and also that my cmos chip itself is "Not for resale"...(?)... so, I figured, hey, why not flash this bios and see if I can get any more new settings.

Mistake number 1- fixing something that isn't broken.

This official release bios sucks, I seem to have lost my ability to simply have the board reboot into secondary cmos save file automatically like it did before. Also, I'm not able to run my old timings and fsb with this new bios.... crappy....

Next I try the beta 11-25-05 bios that many here seem partial too, and again, no ability to autoload secondary settings when I push a timing too far. This I can live with, but I'm pretty darned confused as to why I am unable to attain the same fsb speeds as before... with all the settings identical, and same components and all, now I can get to 270 fsb (heck I can get to 310 if I dump ram and multiplier speeds) but I'm just not getting the same overall speeds as before.

Moral of the story? If it isn't broke, don't fix it. And if you do fix something that's not broken, then you'd better hope that you've a resourse like dfi-street to help you out heheh.

Back to the drawing board....

OCZ Plat is great memory. What revision did you get? Mine have a tiny "1.0" in the bottom right corner which tells me its TCCD and not TCC5.

I had just the oppisite experience as you. The only bios I have had luck with is the newest official release. With it I can boot with 255x11 but that pushin 1.65 volts. At 1.57 I am primin' 260x10. With the other ones I had some oc issues.

As strange as it may seem the culprit was the cpu start up voltage which I had set to 1.55 with the old bios, and I had no problems with it booting up and staying stable.

But now with the new bios I have had to leave it just at startup and it seems to be diong the trick.

I now have my cpu oc'd to 2.7 at 1.57v and as far as i can tell with all the tests i'm runnig it appears to be stable with temps of around 40-45 at full load, and thats on stock heatsink and fan.
