Tempy Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Im new here, but read alot and learned alot here, please help me I have a question:). I have a DFI NF4 SLI-DR motherboard, an opteron 146 @ 2.9 ghz, a 7800 Gt video card, and 1 gig of g.skill ddr600 (2X512). I want to know if I get another set of the g.skill, I would still be able to run it at 290 htt, as its rated for 300 fsb, but I heard that running 4 sticks of ram can effect overclock. But the ram really isnt overclocked, its ddr600, so getting another set shouldnt effect my overclock right? Im just trying to get another gig in the system, so it has 2 gigs, but dont want to lose my overclock.
Ivan OS Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 It`s better to have 2 x1GB then 4X 512.You probably won`t have DDR600 1T anymore.I think only ATi chipset can go 1T with 4 sticks. Also it depends on your CPU how would that change(4 sticks) affect your OC because mem. controller is on CPU.
rapty Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 As far as I know its alot easier to overclock with 2 sticks than 4 I am trying with 4 sticks at the moment and I can tell you its a pain in the cavern!, cant seem to get her game stable at the moment changes in the bios are helping though and she's getting their. It may affect your overclock I don't really know thats a question I wan't answered aswell , iff it does'nt change your OC you will have to change timeings with four sticks in order to get stability & most likely other RAM options. Dman_15 Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Not at 1T command afaik. Not even sure if its 100% dead cert you'll be able to run @ 2T. Someone else will clear it up a bit better.
divided Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 it most def will change your overclock. EVERY stick of memory clocks diff and running 4x512 will force you to run at 2t which is a bit of a performance hit. and your timings will likely change as well. Fight Game Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 You'll definelty have to run CPC disabled (or 2T). More sticks don't overclock as well, because you'll only be able to overclock to the highest point of the weakest stick. And since you're adding more sticks, you're adding the possibility of a weaker stick. You should just go for it. I wouldn't think that you would have to go lower than 290, since they are rated for 300...but you may have to just a little. Is 290 the highest stable you've been able to get with 2 sticks? If so then you may have to lower a little. Since you'll be running 2T, this may allow you to keep the 290. Another option, if it's not stable, would be to loosen one or two of the timings. I think even if you ran 2T, loosened the timings, and lost 10 or 20mhz (maybe even more), the advantage of having the extra gig would still outweigh all this. Of course a benchmark couldn't prove this, but measuring load times would.
