Advice for School

I'm sitting here in school (trying to register for classes), trying to figure out which classes to pick, and what times..etc... Now is the time where I have to pick a major for the next two years, but none of them interest me. Really not sure what is out there that I would like to do, so I figured.."Why not ask DFI" (yea..i really said that in my mind).

SO..to my questions:

1) What did you go to college for? ( which major )

2) What were your interests when you went to college?

3) Have you changed your major in college? (if YES, how many times?)

4) Are you doing anything related to that now?

Thanks in advance..

If you love something as a Hobby do not make it your Job. I made that mistake. I work on fast cars all week, and by the time weekend comes I don't feel like turning wrenches on mine.

I think I am about to do the same thing.. I love working on computers and such, but im seeing very quickly how I don't think it will become a career for me. Tried computer science major, but found it to be a major drag. Looking into Information and Computer Security (option in Criminal Justice), but I dont think that will be so good either..(and they dont have all the classes at this campus which is an hour and a half by train. the other campus is about a 40 minute drive from my house in the opposite direction).. I am thinking of switching majors..again..argh so many choices

thanks.

Hehe, I am just getting ready to start the semester today.

I am currently an Secondary Education major with my areas being in Sociology and Social Scienes.

When I first started college I wanted to go into broadcasting was a communications major for two semesters. After I got involved with it, I decided it just wasn't for me and decided that I wanted to be a teacher. I think the normal college student changes their major 6 times. Thank goodness I have only done it once or otherwise I don't think I would ever get out!

My advice is no matter what major you pick, try to stay at the same college, transferring is a nightmare, even to an in-state institution (at least in Idaho). I transferred from a junior college in Idaho to Boise State University and I still had issues.

Best of luck with whatever you decide!

I'm taking CAD... only 18 so still in college. I've already got a job doing it though... in fact I'm there right now ;). Oh, and my interests... obviously I'm into computers :).

What are you designing in CAD?

NuLL-- I chose a related field. I love playing with my pc but like CPDMF said you burn yourself out on. So i went into IT and focused on network administration. Now i work on networks all day and tweak my pc at night.

What part of IT are you in? I was actually thinking of going into IT. What kind of classes did you take while in School?

TYIA

My sister is actually a teacher now for 2-3 years. Shes teaching 4th grade, and she loves it, good luck to you!

I'm trying to stay at the same college, but I'm just having a hard time figuring out what I want to do. Too many choices, and the first 2 years went by too quickly for me to decide what I really liked.

thanks.

i'm a civil engineer by trade. After I got my degree in Turkey and worked in the field for 1.5 years, I came to U.S. to get my MBA, now working as an operational analyst (crunching numbers, creating statistical models, excel, access, visio, ms project...). As you can see I am a technical person but trying to be a manager, it's different (for some it's subtle, for others it's not). By the way, I was a research and teaching assistant at the USM (univ. of southern maine, portland) during my MBA years (3 years), so I had a chance to observe everyday so many college students. Let me tell you first this, college means fun everywhere in the world. I had to take 44 credits extra (it means almost 15 classes) to finish my school and i am talking about f's and repeats! So what happened in the end, perhaps I am a young professional now, and have a bright future in front of me, however I have little regrets not to "learn" (learn < > study) concepts during college. Whatever you select, try to understand the concepts, not the terms or equations! That being said, rest depends on you, if you wanna work in corporate america and wanna make good money, search census statistics to find most valued occupations (actuarial science, for instance, one of the gems in the market in which demand > supply). If you wanna be an entrepreneur and already decided on something, IMO, select whatever you want, roll the dice, flip the coin - will not matter in the end - you will spend all ur life to define a "product". And take my words not so seriously :)

im doing CSE - Computer systems engineering - currently im in my junior year and I absolutely love it - this degree is a very nice mix of software/hardware development, it literally allows you to work in an infinite amount of fields....im also doing a double major, in that and in mathematics - they kind of go hand in hand :)

Went to BU as a Computer Systems Engineering major for 2 years. Burn out on all that. Enjoyed a more "well rounded" education, tried to switch to the business school for MIS(management information systems), ended up transfering but did end up in MIS. Less than a year left now, work in ITS at school and lots of networking stuff on the side.
