jeffp83 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Hi, I just put together my first Athlon 64 X2 system. It contains a DFI NF4 SLI-DR (updated to the latest BIOS), A64 X2 3800+ CPU, 2 x 512MB of Ultra TCCD RAM, 2 Western Digital WD2000JS 200GB drives that I have mirrored via NVRAID running off of SATA II ports 1 and 2, and a enermax 600W PSU. Here is the problem. There are lots of little hiccups in Windows. Delays before starting programs, installing drivers/software takes an insane amount of time. I noticed this is what happens during installs, the CD-ROM will start copying files, then will stop, then the hard drive starts going, then stops, then the CD-ROM starts copying files again. It doesn't seem to be able to copy from the CD and run the hard drives at the same time. Too much overhead? This is on a fresh install of Windows XP Pro, just the drivers are loaded. I have updated Windows with all updates, and I have installed the AMD X2 processor driver. Also, this morning when I booted up my computer, it took a very long time to find the RAID array before getting into Windows. After it found it, it then complained that the array was degrading... after I got into Windows, NVRAID said the array was healthy. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks! ExtraPickles Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I would start by going into the RAID setup and telling it to rebuild the array which it will then do when it gets in Windows. What NF4 drivers did you install? Does it take a long time to shut down? -pickles
lowboy Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Have you installed Nvidia firewall or network mgr if so uninstall both and also never use Ntune as has crashed many systems. You as need to run stability tests on system ie memtest,OCCT,and prime95.
jeffp83 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I used the latest NF4 drivers from NVIDIA's site, shut down speed isn't bad. I didn't install the network manager, no.
boatasiaus Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Does Event Viewer show any warnings or errors?

Contrariedad Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 aaa network manager not recomended?*edit* what with the usb drivers not working and the network manager not being recoemended can anyone give a raw list of what i need to run this mobo stable. i mean like chipset driver from... usb2 driver from..... gig lan diver from... smbus??? (now i have no idea what im on about) I've built several DFI NF4-based systems and have had luck with: 1. RAID Controller & Storage Controller drivers during Windows Setup (F6) - Only if using RAID. 2. Run the latest NVidia NF4 driver install in Windows but of the four components, install only SMBus, Ethernet, Audio (skip the storage/IDE driver) - and then when asked do not install either of the two optional components. 3. Install the display adapter I want to say that this is all I install. I don't always even install the AMD dual core driver. As far as the problem goes, there's definitely something wrong - you have great components similar enough to one of mine (mine is extremely fast and responsive) that it's worth your effort to get it figured out and then you'll have great system. My money is on the HD system given the clue you saw. Do you have an extra drive? Could you install on a separate drive just to see if the problem goes away (and thus you've ruled out one potential problem)? repoman Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Since it's just a fresh install, it shouldn't be too much trouble to try an install on just one drive.. maybe change SATA ports, disable unused IDE channels/SATA ports in the BIOS. I really don't have any experience with RAID though so I dont know..
