Need Help with new PC problems in XP

Recommended Posts

I'm struggling trying to figure out whats the problem with my new gaming rig. Its a SLI-DR Expert with bios 12/7/05; 1 Corsair XMS CMX512-PC3200C2 rev1.1 in Slot 3 (orange) clocked at 200mhz 2-3-3-6-2T. It has 1 WD Caviar SE16 250MB HDD plugged into NVIDIA Sata1; and 1 NEC 2410A plugged into IDE 1. I did a clean install of XP SP2 + all updates..used the latest NFORCE4 drivers from the beginning (6.7).

Issue #1

XP freezes seemingly random, hour glass and usually unfreezes within 10 ~ 40 seconds. Every time this happens a log entry in the System event viewer appears stating Event ID 51: An error was detected on device DeviceHarddisk0D during a paging operation.

Issue #2

Foreground app freezes for 10 ~ 90 seconds; on occasion longer to infinite/crash. No log entries.

Issue #3

I have a San Diego 3700+, bios shows the volts to be 1.36v but in all the threads I've read it should be 1.45v for stock speed. Should I raise my volts, could this be the source of issue #2?

I'm not sure if memory has anything to do with the above, but I'm replacing the Corsair with OCZ OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K in a few days; I've seen a number of threads that Corasir and DFI don't play well. Prime95 ran for 3hrs no problems before I stoped it.

Try upping the voltage. it might help.

I'm not sure, this is a long shot, but it could be some other processor excuting and taking up the cpu..

Did you check your processes..? use Process Explorer since it even shows the hidden processor..

Running memtest would be a good idea.. also up the voltages..

I'm waiting for a new pair of matched OCZ ram, should arrive about Thursday. How long should I run mem86 for? Whats the minimum hours to run Mem86+ and Prime95 to consider stable? I've read people running it for as long as 13hrs.

I saw a post by AngryGames that said not to use the nvidia sw bus driver which can cause lockups; i read in another thread not to use the nvidia ide drivers either if using a sata cdrom..which I'm not but it seems the nvidia drivers are buggy. I am using all the nvidia drivers (v6.7) currently including all the nforce software. I'm going to uninstall all the nvidia drivers/software and use the MS drivers to see if that makes a difference.

the ide drivers certainly can cause problems in some setups.

how long you memtest for is up to you but i think 3-4 full passes and then some test 5 and test 8 loops will give you a good indication of ram stability. i'm sure at least part of the problem lies in just plain not enough ram and it ends up paging.

That CPU voltage is fine for stock speeds. I have run my CPU @ 1.29V @ stock speeds and had no issues at all. You may want to run Data Lifeguard on that WD Harddrive and make sure it is OK. Then try loading optimised defaults in bios and then run MEMTEST. I am running all the latest drivers from DFI on my board and it is rock stable. Also, check your temps, it could also be a heat issue.
