Strange Ram/Mobo behaviour

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm wondering if anyone has any advice. I have installed my ram into my mobo YELLOW Slots (The ram and mobo listed below in my signature) and found the pc was able to run only at stock settings. It will rarely tolerate even a slight adjustment of the FSB, 201 would most often causes the system to reboot. The pc seems to post okay (sometimes) and after counting the ram, it would not be able to verify dpi pool, or load settings from the CMOS, it would simply reboot. Often on the 3rd attempt at rebooting, the pc freezes, and I have to pull the pwr on the psu, or sometimes reset the cmos with the jumper.

Only a few times I was able to get it to boot at 202 or 203 fsb, at random it would be able to read the cmos, and work correctly.

In the DRAM options, I have adjusted it to run at 2.0 CAS, from the factory 2.5, but even changed ALL the options to read "AUTO", and adjusted the FSB back to 200. It still wouldn't boot. I even set the DRAM speed lower from auto, to operate at 180 and 166. Won't boot, even with everything else fsb ect set to auto.

To boot, I had to load my saved cmos bank one, 2.0 CAS, 200FSB, and mostly everything else set to auto, one of the ram settings set to '3'. I believe I found this BOOTABLE setting originally by using 'load optimized settings'. Any slightly minor change to fsb, or anything else result in the system rebooting over and over again. I have tried changing the voltage from 2.5 - 2.85, with verying unpredictable results as well.

Then I decided to move the ram to the ORANGE slots. with the 'BOOTABLE' settings, I was able to post with a FSB @ 210, and the DRAM speeds at 166 first time. I have not had enough time to start playing around with more settings. But still. WTF?

Does anyone have an explanation on why the ORANGE SLOTS work, the yellow does not? I know it could be bad ram, or worse, bad mobo. Any logical explanation for this?

It is always advised to use the orange slots first..

Anyway, so is your system stable at stock settings?

Can you post your bios settings... like the voltages..?

If you can boot with stock settings, I would guess you can run some torture tests can make sure the rig is stable.. At least run SuperPi 32M and OCCT.. then you know there is nothing wrong elsewhere..also it is better you run memtest too.. atleast test #5. It is always better to make sure your system is stable at stock.. and the commponents are working fine..i'm sorry i cant give a logical explanation since the problem could be anything... thats why u need to test part by part..also what is your bios version.. do you have the lates official one..

Also sometimes it could your psu.. maybe its not pumping the required power.. Like i said, it can be number of things..

Why is the sky blue?...How come the grass is green?...How come it doesn't work in the yellow slots?...If it works don't fret. I had a pair of Ballistix that stopped working in the orange slots and would only work in the yellow. They went bad and I switched to Ocz that work in either slot. No logical explanation.
