Help - Processor Upgrade and PSU Problems

Recommended Posts

Well, I am having a few problems with what used to be a stable set-up, all of which seems to stem from my attempts to upgrade. By stable I mean the system had been running reliably over a 12 month period in SLi playing UT2k4, HL2 and DOD:S amongst others.

Everything was fun until a week ago when I got some more dosh together to replace the old 3000+ Winchester with a new 3800+ X2. That booted in to windows XPSP2 (without the X2 driver) for about an hour but became unstable, BSODs about a Page File problem in a Non-Page Area, finally I Winflashed to 623-3 but whilst adjusting settings it went to a point where it wouldn't POST.

Thanks to the guys in the forum :O) I got lots of setup guides rounded up and TMOD's CD, reset the CMOS and flashed to 623BTA with no HDDs or floppies and only one video card installed. OK, I set up CPU VIDs (1.52v) and RAM voltages (BH5, so 2.8v) which are recommended values by RGone. That setup POSTed and ran Memtest and Prime OK so I connected the SATA HDD, which wouldn't start.

It was late at this point so I was checking out some other threads including recommended power noting the old Akasa 460W was a bit underpowered, so I ordered the Enermax Liberty hoping that would help stability. That came Friday and got installed yesterday, but we had house guests so I couldn't devote much time to it. Finally I pressed the power switch today, but aaarg no! I have got the dreaded 4 LEDs showing and the PSU will not start.

At this point I pause to contemplate how it was I managed to build the thing successfully in the first place (with only a few video-card heatsink clearance issues) ... it's not like I am new to building PCs but this is a bit of an uphill struggle.

I have a few things in mind to try - reset CMOS, swap vid card slots, swap the Akasa back in etc. and will try to post back as I progress because it seems so many people are having similar issues in these forums, and I hope it may help.

I could do any additional comments/help, even encouragement, I am not stumped yet but that feeling is pretty near!

Hi Lesaonar, thanks for your words. The Akasa power supply is not a boxed with the case one, and it's quite well regarded here in UK  and was working without problems although I thought I should change it because I was pushing over its max power output. But the power supply I'm having trouble with is actually the Enermax Liberty I just fitted.

The overnight CMOS clear seemed to work, and I got BOOTed into TMOD's CD several times without probs and then flashed the 704-2 BTA BIOS.

Now I'm on an interlude for another CMOS clear.

After a lengthy CMOS clear, got POSTed, changed DRAM voltage to 2.8v, changed initial video to PCIEx. Saved and exited. BOOTed through POST, detected SATA HDD (PATA HDD still disconnected), loaded XP in Safe mode - yes, result! No errors in XP configuration that I could see.

BUT. After exiting windows and shutting down, found I could not re-boot and here we are back with the 4 diagnostic LEDs again aaarg :shake: wtf?

I'm trying the AKASA PSU again. Right, CMOS clear...

I must be missing something, right?

Just been to PC World and bought a Hiper Type R 580W. Nice quality and well thought out, plus nice free toolbox.

I stripped the whole rig down and re-seated the CPU, etc. and installed the Hiper PSU. Got in to BIOS and set RGone's recommended values - see stickies/links in RGone's sig - thanks RGone:) Now everything BOOTs without fuss and I have SLi enabled again and all working reliably. It seems my problems were caused by incompatibility with the Enermax Liberty ELT620W whilst the Akasa 460W may have given up the ghost but was underpowered anyway. Who knows, maybe re-seating the CPU did the trick but right now I am not going to be investigating that thought.

The Enermax is going back to the supplier and my advice would be against trying to pair an Enermax Liberty PSU with DFI mobos.
