Guest FZ1 Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 ...when I muffed my IHS removed on my brand new Opty 175. Johnson Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Well done man you must have rather large cojones to attempt it again. But then as you are in the USA I guess the chips are a little cheaper and easier to source than here in the UK....yet to find a 170 anywhere yet for sensible money. Guest FZ1 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I found out that the disposable shaving razor blades are perfect. This is where I got the blades...it's the double bladed variety. As you can see, the width of the blade from the edge of the baseboard is less than that of the distance to the delicate circuitry (with exception of the side between the triangle and the "z" - but it barely hits it). Oh, and this is the one I killed so ignore the white marks on the board. So I started from the corner (dramatization) and pivoted until I cut through the whole side: It didn't come right off so I used dental floss to ensure I cut all the way through and *POP* came right off. AndrewZorn Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 dental floss... A+ idea. im waiting to take off my IHS until AMD comes out with something faster than my CPU (makes sense kind of). i just cannot bring myself to do it! CPDMF Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I use an exacto knife that I have ground the blade shorter so that the part that holds the blade hits the side of the cpu so not to go in to far.
lowboy Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 FZ1 by chance did you measure the exact distance from chip edge to any parts that could be hit. I have wanted to uncap but without know exactly how far in I could go I just haven't woked up the guts to try it.I would sheet if I killed even a 350. cpu let alone a 175opty. If you do know how far in please PM me. I must say you have more balls than me ,to have tried the second cpu this soon after the first one as I would have to think about it for long ,long time. I think I would have cryed for ya if you killed a second one.
Guest FZ1 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Yeah, somewhere I posted that but I don't remember where. Here are some new pics that should help - keep in mind this is the dual core cpu's which are slightly different than Angry's single core pics in another thread. Note the gold markings to ensure you have it oriented properly.
