BlueOval Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 I know nF4 is all the rage nowadays, but I've seen a post wherein Angry_Games states that the nF3 250Gb board was (is?) the best mobo ever to come out of DFI. I know one can glean a lot of useful info from reading the forum in general, but I was just wondering why there's no 250Gb sticky relative to BIOS settings, RAM to use and the like such as there is for the nF4.. veener88 Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 I have the agree, that it is very good question.
cmay119 Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 It might be because, there aren't as many common problems with this motherboard as there is with the nF4 and 939 nF3 motherboards. Possibly making the sticky thread very unorganized. The only common problem with this motherboard that I've seen is that it sometimes doesn't play well with the 6 series nVidia video cards, but I haven't seen a thread about that problem in atleast a month, so it looks to be for the most part resolved. Just my 2 cents.
sailindawg Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 This forum section is more geared towards problems/tech support, than to compare overclocking ability. The hard core overclocking forums are all about NF4's and Opterons and dual cores. We're all late coming to the DFI NF3 game. This board had it's heyday about a year ago and got eclipsed by S939. We are part of the second crop of users that are still discovering this board and it's abilities. The last thing to hit the hard core forums was the Newark's. But RAM has changed from when this board first came out and 2x1024 is more the norm, than 2x256 or 2x512. Also, pc4000 RAM has gottten tighter and is in more use than when this board first came out. I, for one, would love to a forum thread dedicated back to overclocking this board, especially with 2x1024 RAM. I'm trying to figure out if I can get this cpu's mem controller to play nice at high HTT with my 2 G. I could also be hoping against hope. About the only place here that we could share ideas about oc'ing this board, is in the overclocking forum section of DFI-Street rather than in the Tech Support area. veener88 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I am just wanting to start of OC this board and I have to say I am having a hard time trying to find any info on the board to get me in the right direction. I would love a sticky for us.
Bodhaguru Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I agree
sailindawg Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I have found this a great link: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=329627 or http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20823 Not exactly what you're asking for, but a great starting point. I also just google to find threads regarding this board, a lot of is dated, but it's a starting point. I also use A-64 Tweaker to get a screen shot of the mem timings that are on Auto. if you play around with HTT's and get something that is stable in Memtest, say 5-8 passes of test #5, then I'll boot to Windows and get a screen shot of all the timings and work from there. It's all trial and error. Start with an overclock that you know you're stable at, say 12x210. Now try to duplicate that at 10x252. Or 8x315 if you dare. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. But the bottom line is that all machines are different and it's all time consuming trial and error.
learners permit Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 That is correct. The only way is trial and error coupled with some record keeping so you dont relive the nightmares that come along. Feel free to PM me with any specific questions.
Guest Blooz1 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I agree with learners permit about the record keeping! I write down everything I do when O/Cing in a notebook, plus I write down all Genie bios settings and changes on a logsheet I made up in Excel. This is done by hand, so if there is some sort of catastrophy I have a paper copy of what I did. It also comes in handy when switching from one set of ram to another, so I can just insert known "good" O/C settings.
sailindawg Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 What learners permit & Blooz1 said. Good record keeping while overclocking is incredibly helpful.

I know how to OC, I know how to google, and I know how to search a forum for answers. I just wish there were some tried-and-true guidelines for what works and what doesn't stickied here for the board since this is where DFI users come for help. Whether it be hardware issues, what the different BIOSes do and links for them, what RAM might be problematic, etc. I realize that this board came out a year or so ago, but the nF3/s754 platform is still alive and well the proof of which is the new s754 Venice core from AMD and the numerous sigs of people at this forum with the 250Gb board in their sigs. Anyway, thanks for the links. @learners permit I just may do that, thank you.
