mikemcc Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 I have looked everywhere for some sheets or small rolls of fan filter material -- like that stuff that typically comes with fan covers/finger protectors that ppl put on the sides of their cases. I have googled and gone to many of the places that sell a bunch of fans like SVC, Jab-Tech and on and on, and I can't find any. I have an Antec case with two side vents and, unfortunately, the only place for my system is in my utility room with the washer and dryer. I have three kids (and two dogs and two cats -- oh, and a wife -- she's the one who put me in the utility room), and, as you might imagine, the crap floating around in this room from the dryer is intense. I'd be scared to light a match in here for fear it might blow up! Anyway, I am constantly having to remove the fan from my SI-120 to blow out all the lint and junk and then I have to vacuum it out of the bottom of my case and my desk and so on. That stuff that comes with fan cover finger protectors isn't going to stop all of this lint, but if I can go from blowing out my HS once a week to once every two or three weeks would be a huge improvement. Any advice? Or, if no one knows where to get this stuff, any other ideas about good filter material? I've seen those computer bags, and I may have to go with one of those, but they seem pretty ugly and inconvenient to me. Thanks. ksfitz83686 Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Hey, If you just need a single 120mm fan filter, I have one I'll give you, PM me an address and I'll mail it to you. The filter came with an Evercool SFF-12 fan I got from newegg.
JiveTurkey Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Slightly OT, I know, but this comes from the product description: "Spider Filter Fan always care about your PC clean." Engrish.com, anyone? (Yes, I checked. Evercool is in Taiwan.) Also, that's very generous, ksfitz. That's what makes this a great community.
Guest Blooz1 Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Since you're in the laundry room - I've seen lots of posts where people used fabric softener dryer sheets as filters! They're supposed to work very well, but they DO cut down on airflow by about 1/3.
mikemcc Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Yes, that is a very kind offer from ksfitz and he won't even let me PayPal him a couple of bucks for postage! He is the kind of person who makes this forum so great. I have to say that the DFI motherboards may be a bit more difficult to set up than some other MBs, (though it is certainly worth all of the effort), but I haven't seen ANY of the other forums for other products even come close to this one. So, with all of the help you can get here, the DFI MBs sure seem like a great value to me. My last build was DFI, this one is, and the next one will be as well. And thank you for the advice on the dryer sheets. I had heard that one before and might give that a try while I wait for the filters ksfitz is going to send. You should see the crap that comes out of my heatsink -- it's worse than the hairballs one of our cats is constantly hawking up. I wish I didn't think I had to give a home to every stray animal that comes along...

ksfitz83686 Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Yeah, if you use dryer sheets, I would definitely use dryer sheets that have been used (maybe more than once), just to avoid the off chance you might suck in some kind of funky fabric softener chemicals or something, better safe than sorry. BlueOval Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 If you can get ahold of some air conditioner filters - like the ones that they use in apartment buildings - they work very well and don't cut down airflow quite as much as a dryer sheet. Just cut to fit.

Guest Blooz1 Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I've never tried the dryer sheets myself. I learned the value of having filters a couple of years ago when I bought my Lian-Li PC-65b, and filters have become "standard" to me. Both of my LX-6A19 based cases have front intake filters standard, plus both have side intakes with filters. I clean all the filters monthly with an old toothbrush - works well!
