Getting low-quality RAM to work

Recommended Posts

Okay, first of all, I'm a n00b at building computers.

Now that we've got that out of the way...

I recently purchased parts for a new computer...listed in my sig. Now, whenever I try and start my new baby up, it gives me one long beep, then nothing happens. (Except the CPU heatsink slows down or stops altogether at the same time. Not sure if that's just some whacked out side effect.) After a good amount of Googling, I found out that that indicates some kind of memory error. Biiiiig surprise there. (Well, it was then...now that I've taken more time to ponder the meaning of "Value Select", of course it seems obvious.) Now, here's the question. I've heard that DFI boards have trouble with low-quality RAM. (Or low-quality RAM has trouble with the uber-ness that is a DFI board, if you care to put it that way.) Is there any way I can get it to work nonetheless?

Model number is VS512MB400. Version number...Well, the only other number on all of them is 4119054911709381xx. The xx is 43, 44, 50, and 51 on each respective RAM stick.

EDIT: I'd assume such close-together version numbers means they're all probably from the same batch.
