Mr. Jules Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 ok, so I built my friend a system about a month and a half ago with the sig as follows below. Running just fine until a week and a half ago when it took a dump. Got to look at it today and tested everything I could possibly think of and all checks out but the mobo and proc. I have no other board to test the proc in so I am assuming it is ok, doesn't look burnt at all. So here is the diagnosis: 1. Little light @ bottom of pci slots is on when power is plugged in. 2. Turn on power and the cpu fan will, on occasion, spin momentarily before stopping  3. There is no post beep, nothing I have cleared the cmos, moved the jumper to clear w/ no success. All I have plugged into the mobo is the proc, 1 512 stick of corsair (in dimm 1), and the power (both 20pin and 12v). What are my options here? Any way from here to determine whether the problem is the mobo or the proc? Any other ideas for clearing the bios maybe? I am really kinda stuck and don't want to have to RMA either(if that is even possible) so if anyone has a good idea... heck make that any idea, I'll take it. THunDA Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Have you tried to remove the psu from the system and jump it like this.. ? http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/show...ad.php?t=118964 And also test the rails with a dmm like this ? http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/show...ad.php?t=137886
cmay119 Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 That same thing happened to me when my PSU was acting up. I pulled it out of the case and jump started the PSU and from then on it ran fine.
Mr. Jules Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 I may well try that but I think in the past 2 days we have tried 3 differnt (all working) ps with this board and it always comes out to the same problem. I just did a "proper CMOS recovery" following this guide http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showpost.p...04&postcount=24 but still have the same problem. Hook it all up, get my hopes up, follow the guide, push power and..... nothing. Is it time to try and RMA this board, and since it has been overclocked will newegg still take it back or not? I checked the proc and the as5 that I put on it looks good, no burn marks or brown so I am assuming it is fine and it must be the board. Do you think it would still be beneficial to jump the power supply or is that kinda eliminated since I have tried 3 different ones. Thanks so much for the help so far, i'll keep you updated. learners permit Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Certainly sounds like a psu issue. Have you tried powering up via the on the board power switches to eliminate the case switches as a potential problem.
Mr. Jules Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Yeah, I just did but it made no difference. It just confuses me though. Why would the light near the pci slots come on and yet the board won't power up. It seems like the ps is working otherwise I wouldn't get the light and it seems that something has still got to be working on the motherboard too otherwise no light right? I just don't know where to go from here quite honestly! All I can figure is that it must be the mobo or proc, am I wrong in assuming that? Could it really have anything to do w/ the power supply?
cmay119 Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 What were the other PSU's that you tried. I agree with LP, this really does sound like a PSU issue. When mine was acting up, the Power LED was on, but when I would turn on the system the PSU fan would spin for about 1 second and then would turn right back off. Pull all non-vitale components out of your system, only have 1 hdd, 1 cd-rom, 1 stick of ram, processor and video card, then KB and Mouse. Nothing else should be hooked up. Clear the CMOS for atleast 1 hour and then try to boot the system. Hope this helps you... EDIT: I see that you're already trying only one stick, have you moved it to slot 2 or 3 to see if that helps at all?
learners permit Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 BTW I killed 2 cheapo psu's with this board so far.
Mr. Jules Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Yeah, I have tried pulling everything but the vitals. I am going to try my 1 stick for RAM in slot 3 in a few minutes; that is the only slot I have yet to try. It's so odd, I don't get the cpu fan to spin EVERY time I try turning it on, more like 1/15 times. What am I supposed to conclude from that? And how exactly does a mobo KILL a psu, I have never heard of that before!? Anyways wish me luck, I am going to try and start this bad boy one more time. I have had the battery pulled for 3 hours or so the only things hooked up are the proc, the memory and the power. PLEASE if anybody can think of anything else I am dying to figure this out!!! (And to answer the question about what psu I've tried the one now is just an old Antec 300w, and a 430w TRT2 psu.) learners permit Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 It just sucked the life outta them. I seriously doubt it's gonna hurt this 600 watt quad 12V. rail monster I have now.
Mr. Jules Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Alright, I am getting ready to raise the white flag of RMA here. I just tried one more time with different memory, different ps (fortron 300w), reseated proc and hs, and a cleared cmos and the only thing I can get out of it is a fan spinning on the ps for a half a second. Is that it? Is my only option now RMA? I am out of ideas and don't know what the next step is. Plese tell me there is some guru out there who can wave a magic wand to heal my poor NF3.
