Boot issues

Recommended Posts

I, like many other people, have been affected by the 'blinking cursor' issue... where the computer will boot, and just before it gets to the OS screen, it'll just hang, with the cursor blinking at the bottom.

After much messing around, I appear to have fixed the problem. The main factor is the memory. I had my timings underclocked (quite significantly infact), and even though it was stable when it did eventually boot into windows, it's still really annoying having to press reset, sometimes upto 8-10 times just to boot up.

Here is what to do: Load up cpu-z, and goto the 'spd' tab. Manually set the four bottom values (CAS# Latency) etc, manuall in bios. (My frequency is still way overclocked, but it works fine.)

And one other thing to try, which is very random, and i've no explination for... try setting 'Boot Other Device' to 'enabeled' in bios.... for some odd reason, this helped it a little more when I had all the timings set really tight. (i.e. it only took a few re-sets as opposed to 8/10)

Hope it helps.

Alrite nbillo..I also had a few strange problems when trying to get my usb ports in working order.

1. Sometimes xp doesn't even realise you have usb host controllers - this seemed to fix itself if i had a usb stick connected during the install, however mine was connected to the extra onboard usb connectors, but i reckon it could be worth a try)

You can download usb2 drivers from driverguide.com (user temp password 512) dont tell anyone i said that. See if this jaults windows memory.
