Joe Rawket Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I'm going to try to keep this short and sweet. I just built my new rig, Newegg sent me the wrong RAM so I'm using Corsair XMS memory until I get my pair of OCZs. System is periodically hanging up on me, screen goes black and then it starts beeping and 3 LEDs show up in the bottom left corner of the mobo. My system specs are in my sig, I've read numerous times that DFI is picky on the ram, is this another case with me? Using Corsair XMS, model CMX512-3200C2 DDR400. I've got both sticks plugged into the yellow slots, and then it hangs on me, turn it off, take out both sticks, put one back in the furthest slow away from the CPU and it seems to run alright. So is it my RAM that's screwing me up?
R3aper Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 try with the furthest orange slot awy from the processor and if that doesnt work, if the beeps are long maybe 1 second then its the ram
Joe Rawket Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I tried the orange one furthest away from the CPU and that seems to work. The beeps are about one second long and they just keep going and going until I turn it off, and it always seem to happen when I put a load on the system, like running Call of Duty 2. So when it hangs, I take out both sticks of RAM, put one back in, turn it on, Windows load, shut it down, put the other stick back in, and then turn it on again and all seems well. It's like this RAM can't handle anything. Getting frustrated.. I appreciate your reply.. can others chime in on this as well please? I want to pinpoint this so I can sleep tonight. Voltes-5 Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 Load the default on bios and run memtest for each ram. That will at least tell you if the memory sticks are good or bad. It would be even better if you have other memory sticks that you can use for now and see if it boots up. If not run memtest for the XMS. Joe Rawket Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I'll give memtest a try and we'll see what's up.
Critter Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 What bios are you using? You might want to update that. Check the "Stock Speed settings" for timings. Try 2.8 volts on the RAM for dual channel, that's what I had to do. Good luck.
Joe Rawket Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I haven't checked the BIOS yet, but at the same time, I haven't flashed it either, so whatever shipped with the motherboard is what I have. Do I have to move the jumper setting on the mobo to get 2.8 volts to the RAM for dual channel..? I haven't done that yet. My timings are stock, I haven't tweaked a thing yet; I'm just trying to get everything stable before I start overclocking but I can't even seem to do that. wevsspot Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 No need to change any of the jumper settings on the m/b to get 2.8 on your RAM. In fact, at stock jumper settings you should be able to get at least 3.20 clean volts to your ram if you need it. If you've got a relatively recent m/b build your BIOS should be 6/23/05. If not flash to 6/23/2005 or 07/04-2bta. I personally like the 07/04 BIOS. It will boot just about any CPU/RAM configuation. Don't spend a ton of time on this temporary RAM. Everything will change when you get your new OCZ sticks.

There's no need to move any jumpers to get 2.8 volts, look in the manual, since you in BIOS without any tweaking can set it to 3.2 volts. Dual channel: the volts will be the same, it's just sometimes a more demanding setting. If you didn't get the manual of 140+ pages download it from www.dfi.com, thus you'll have a reference especially concerning BIOS. Guest mercyless Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 dont need to move the jumper for 2.8v on ram. best check the bios file you have , if you have everest home edition that will give info on you bios, or watch bottom left corner when system boot , disable logo screen to see it
