aszid Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I apologize if this has been answered already, i tried searching for the answer, but came up with nothing. I'm considering upgrading to an athlon64 x2 processor, but i haven't been able to find out if winxp home edition will support it fully. I know that for "normal" dual processor setups, you need to have winxp pro to actually use more than one of them, but i have no idea about dual cores. Anyhow, will winxp home support both cores? or will i need to get a copy of winxp pro? thanks in advance

aszid Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 hrm.... Well, before i read your reply i did more searching. According to what i could find out from microsoft.com, dual core processors count just the same as hyperthreading. And it says that dual core processors ARE supported with windowsXP home edition. Am i reading that wrong, or are you just guessing without knowing? found that info here: http://g.msn.com/9SE/1?http://download.mic...E=1&CS=AWP&SR=

madian225 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Hi I am using XP Pro with my AMD x2 4800+ chip and have had no problems at all, the system info knows that I have a dual core chip which is correctly displayed as such. I can see no reason as to whht the Home Edition would not also support a dual core chip but just my thoughts mind

RED STATE RAY Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 $200 ??? According to newegg.com, the difference in retail price is $25. Plus, if you're buying any hardware, you should get the OS at OEM pricing, which will save you $100 on either Home or Pro. Don't ask me for all the exact differences, but to me, getting the Pro edition over Home is well worth the $25.
Angry_Games Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 XP Home does support X2 cpu's as well as Intel hyperthreaded cpu's there's no real reason to get Pro unless you need the specific functions of Pro (which is mainly admin stuff and IIS webserver stuff)
crashthenet44 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 $140 at newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16837102062
