stanggt00 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I have never really seen anything definitive showing which way a fan should be placed onto a heatsink until I was O/Cing my uncles computer. The H/S and fan were a set where the fan was blowing cool air onto the H/S. I swapped it and noticed the temps increase during stress testing. I havent tested it on my own rig just yet, but I currently have mine sucking the heat away from the heat sink. I am wondering, which way the rest of you have yours mounted? Have you ever seen a temperature drop?
ooeric Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 it depends try it either or. if you look at most of our comps, we blow air onto if you look at systems like dells compaqs, they suck air from HS but i would guess blowing air up or down depends on your case, and or if you use air ducts
red930 Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 You want the fan setup so the airflow is into the heatsink fins. This is called impinging airflow and has the greatest effect on the surface of the heatsink.
Kilamon Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Like Roadie says, I set my fan to blow throw the fins. My cooler has a lot of surface area though so my normal operating temp is 38 idle/42 load, though with the fan off I get a max of 52 load. Did that for testing since my cooler is supposed to be fanless. Hmm... I have space in my cooler for another 120mm fan... wonder if I added another one how cool it would be... hmmm.... THunDA Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Blowing into the sink is better.. Plus it cools all the surrounding components on the mobo..
MoJo Risin' Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Agreed. Blowing in is definitely better, especially if you have a side case vent w/funnel duct to the CPU. It will pull cooler outside air directly into the HS.
quisman Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 so with that being said...should you set your (lets say 2 on most cases) 2 rear fans to intake or exaust air ? I would assume exaust, but you don't want to "rob" air for your heat sink fan....so maybe intake ? oh the suspense ! !
lowboy Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 You don't want an intake next to an exhaust fan that would be nuts both rear exhaust and hopefully at least 1 front intake and side fan intake.
quisman Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 That is how I am setup. but after some reading I started getting nervous :-
MoJo Risin' Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 The main thing you need to analyze is your system/cpu temps from your monitoring program/device. If they are off the charts for your hardware, you might need alternatives. Post your particulars. It might or might not be cooling fan related. Otherwise, follow Lowboy’s advice. Front case fans intake. Rear case fans outtake (exhaust). Side vent/CPU fans intake.
