new build - fans not coming on

Recommended Posts

evenin all. ive been reading this board for a while now and thought that by the time i'd built my new system i'd know what to do. so its a little embarrasing to be on here asking for help with such a simple sounding issue.

my front and rear fans dont come on!

ive got em hooked up to the fan2 and fan4 connectors on the board and the temps set in BIOS to kick in at 25C,(the lowest it will let me set) but nothing!no spinning, no cooling, not even a hint of motion.

i dont want to hook em straight into the PSU coz they'll be at full speed all the time. any ideas? what have i overlooked?

ok. i have solved the problem and in doing so presented myself with a new one. it would seem in my eagerness to build the damn thing i didnt notice that the fan connectors only have speed sense wires attached and no power or ground cables at all. so it would seem im going to have to splice the cables out of the molex connector and introduce them into the 3pin m/b connectors. nuisance! what a stupid way to cable the fan connectors. thermaltake (soprano) - off my christmas list!

cheers for your help anyway thespin.

This is actually the preferred way. A common recommendation is to *not* power fans using the motherboard headers. With this, you can still monitor the speed of your Thermaltake fans without powering them off of the header (and rather, through your PSU, which is recommended by DFI). You've run into a feature, not a problem.

EDIT: Also, your mobo can only control one external fan, afaik (fan 2). And it can only do this based on the PWMIC's temp reading. If this fan is in the front or rear of case, its unlikey to change the PWMIC's temp reading much. Thus, you won't be getting noise/speed control, at least not the type you're looking for.
