Hardrive Position

Recommended Posts

Good Day,

Im buildling my own acrylic case for the new parts in my Sig. I am placing my Hardrives and my Powersupply in the bottom of the case with a solid partition between them and the rest of the items. Im placing the Powersupply at the back- end of the case, and the Hardrives more toward the front.

What I want to do is position and run the Hd's on their sides. (e.g., place the palm of your right-hand flat on a table, now rotate your hand 90degrees clockwise till your thumb is in the 12 0'clock position) Will this affect wear/performance on the HD? Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with running them in this position? Please,, Im not asking for any guarranteed in writing advice. I wont hold anyone to it if my HD's croak in a week.

Well, i bought my case like nearly 3 years ago. My hard drive rack is basically positioned just like that with four harddrive support. I've had two maxtors and both of them went bad, but not sure if that's just because of improper use or just bad to begin with. I have a SATA drive in there along with a E-IDE and i've given them space between each other so i think you should do the same thing if you have only two drives that you're going to run in that drive cage.

I've heard about setting up the drive wrong will result in bad sectors or physical damage to the disc, but make sure you stabilize it by using good tight screws because you don't want the drive while reading/writing to be viberating. You should have 2x80mm fans there to blow air in or 1x120mm but i don't think it's a problems. Let us know, thanks.

so long as you DONT mount them at a angle you are fine. so mount thiem like this | or this - but not like this / . if you mount them at a angle i have heard that you will have problems but dynamic is right you def want some fans blowing on them or on big one.

Both of you thank you. That is exactly what i was looking for. I will mount them vertical, with space, and I have a silverstone 120mm fan ready to blow some kewl breeze on them. Thanks a ton... Ill have some pics as I do the build with my Wife's new Xmas Digital Camera haha. I just bought a new blade to cut Cast Acrylic on my Table Saw,, my own personal gift to me. :P
