brand new setup, not posting (i don't think - no beeps)

Recommended Posts

this new setup of mine has turned into quite the headache. specs are in sig.

the first time i powered it up i got into the bios just fine. i was poking around the bios and the machine just shut off. the dram led and the standby led were still lit though. ever since i can't get any video. or any beeps or anything.

the leads in the front are set up correctly, the power button will turn it on but not turn it off. the hdd led nor the power led light up on the front. the speaker also has not made a sound. should the buzzer in lower right corner of the mobo make some sounds as it posts (like a speaker)?

basically, when i turn it on now the cpu fan runs and the four red diagnostic led's turn on. but there's no beeps and no video. there were no beeps the first boot when the video actually came on either. the system stays like this from 10 seconds to a minute or two but it eventually just shuts off (right now it's actually been running for a few mins). also, there's no way to turn it off now. the onboard button does nothing (but it will turn it on), and the front button (which also works to turn it on) won't turn it off.

all four power connectors are plugged in. i've tried with just one stick of ram (both of them individually in slot one and slot two) and nothing changes. i've tried the video card in both pci-e slots.

would appreciate some suggestions.

Im not 100% sure, but with an opteron, arent you supposed to have ECC Registered RAM modules? You might want to check that out. Let us know how it works out.

i've been doing more research ... has anybody fixed the problem where you get the 1 second of power on boot? i had that for a bit, but now when i turn it on it stays on forever with the four diagnostic led's lit. when i first plugged in the board (before the one 'successful' 30 second boot) the dram led was on and the power led near the bottom. ever since it shut off the power led comes on when i plug it in but the dram led doesn't come on until i turn on the unit.

the only way to turn it off now is to hit the switch on the back of the psu.

After a normal shutdown the Amber LED at the bottom will stay lit.

If you remove power to the PSU, then turn it back on, the top and bottom Amber LEDs will be on.

This is normal operation.

Here is the way to read the Diagnostic LEDs.

4 LEDs on = Power applied

3 LEDs on = CPU has been detected OK

2 LEDs on = RAM has been detected OK

1 LED on = VGA has been detected OK

0 LEDs on = System has booted to the Operating System.

As long as you are in the BIOS including running memtest from the BIOS option, there will be one LED on.

If you are getting 4 LEDs on, it means the rig is having trouble detecting the CPU.

when i restore power to the psu only the bottom amber led comes on. the dram led doesn't come on until i hit the power switch on the mobo. when i do that all four diagnostic led's come on. there are no beeps at all. i stated all this in my previous post.

i know that four diagnostic led's means the cpu isn't being detected.

i just did an overnight cmos clear and the same thing has happened. this is frustrating because my very first boot came up fine and i got into the bios (so i assume it's not DOA, although it seems pretty dead now). it said AMD Opteron 148 when it was posting so it's not a problem of the cpu not being supported. since then though it hasn't detected the cpu. nothing is plugged into the mobo ... just the four power connectors, ram (one stick slot two), and the cpu.

the number of posts about this problem is staggering. these boards are picky ... that's for sure.

i just reseated the cpu to no avail. my guess is the board shorted or something the one time it booted and is now toast. can't think of any other reason it would boot fine one time, then shut off like the power went out, and ever since then i get 4 diagnostic led's.

not impressed with my first DFI...

Hi, sorry for robbing your thread (I hope it gets sorted for you :)).

I also have the 2 led scenario:

On PSU only, the standby light is fully lit.

On boot the DRAM LED comes on and all 4 diagnostics count down to 0 and it boots fine.

Only problem being, after boot the stand by LED stays lit.

Thats DRAM and standby LED's both lit during normal operation, any ideas why the stand by light is staying on when system is in full use?

also this is an expert board.

Thanks in advance!
