Memtest86 Stable BUT Can't Get Into XP64

Recommended Posts

Well, I recently switched to the Mushkin Redline XP4000 2GB Kit (regardless of the Infineon CE-6 criticism in other forums) with hopes to get a decent set. Now I’ll come right out of the gate and admit that I’m a RAM noob, and fairly new to overclocking, but I’ve read all the guides and understand the basics. It took me a couple of days of tinkering and research to finally get a couple memtest runs “error free”!!

My Initial Findings:

1) This RAM likes above average volts, but nothing like the 1G Redlines. 2.8V +0.03 appears to be the recommended setting. I’m hearing 2.9V is working for some people as well.

2) I had to clear my cmos and flash to an official DFI NF4 bios to get stable.(623-3)

Now I increased my Bus Frequency to 265 @ 3-3-2-8 and am still completely memtest stable night and day! I just can’t get a clean boot into windows *sigh*. I can only see an outline of the login screen and I have to manually reboot to get out of it

I have the feeling I’m onto a decent set but I need some help from people that know timings a hell of a lot better than me. Suggestions where to loosen? Links to timing guides? TIA

I have also problems with XP x64 :(

I couldn't install it with my system overclocked.

With default settings I could install it. But my settings were memtest and Prime stable!

After the install all worked fine. Tried to load my overclocked settings and it worked and windows was stable.

Made a reboot and windows wouldn't boot. Also not with standard settings.

My conclusion: XP x64 sucks hard!!!

LOL, your conclusion should've been - to not install operating systems while overclocked  :shake:

i know my overclock is completely stable (i do all my testing in x64), but if i install an os, then i reset everything to default speeds

did you read my post? I had to install at stock and the system worked fine.

afterwars I could boot with overclocked settings and all workef fine.

Then I installed chipset drivers and windows won't boot anymore. (also not in Safemode!)

Xp x64 sucks! No wonder it's not installed on super market PCs.

Microsoft doesn't support it very good either. No IE7 Beta for it.

Maybe Vista 64-bit does better?

Guest thespin

Where did you get these chipset drivers ? Were they 64-bit ? Only 64-bit drivers work with Win x64 ...

Seems to me that if you installed and it worked fine, you should reformat and reinstall and leave the install alone ...

I had the same symptom as you with a faint image of the windows splash screen. My problem was the raid drivers I was using. Sorry I can't tell you which ones worked. I made 3 floppies with different 64 bit drivers on them and kept sticking them in til one worked. Maybe this will help altho I never used a sliptreamed install.

Sure I used the 64bit drivers.

In The Version 6.69. The newest ones. You can find them on the nvidia FTP-Server.

I installed stock. Got into windows and all was okay.

Rebootet and loaded my overclocked settings. All was fine.

Installed Chipset drivers - Windows screwed up!

I don't have a Raid. I will have my fingers away from xp x64. I'm now using XP Pro and 2003 Server in dualboot. Much better. I like my 60days evulation copy of win 2003 :)

Until Win XP x64 isn't installed on buyable computers it will suck, because they don't need to make some good drivers. That's the point.
