c83 Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 Yesterday, I noticed that the very small (and very loud) chipset fan started to make even louder noises, then stopped. I assumed, that since the CPU fan only turns on when needed, it was the same with this fan. After I stopped playing FEAR and noticed that the fan was still not working, I began to get worried. After more trouble shooting, and some reading of forums, it became apparent that the fan on my 3 week old (ordered on Nov 30), expensive, motherboard was not working. I installed the Smartguardian util, and saw that the chipset temp was up to 60c. Not good. More time poking around on the net, and I discovered that this is a common problem with these MBs -- hence this post. When I manually spun the fan this morning, it spun just fine. When I turned on the computer, it spun up for a second, then shut down. I went into Smartguardian and greatly lowered the temperature for the chipset fan to turn on, and it started running just fine. Last night, despite changing the settings (although I didn't lower the fan startup temp because the chipset temp was between 57-60, and according to the program the fan should have already been on), I could not get the fan to spin up. So, I'm thinking of replacing the thing. Some folks talked about the Evercool vc-re, but I have been completely unable to locate that. I need a very low profile fan because my graphics card extends over it. Due to the limitations of the MB, I can't use the other PIC slot, which is sort of annoying, but might not help anyway, since it looks like the card would still extend over the area. So, here are the two fans I'm considering buying: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835110103 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835110102 (sorry for the newegg links, but they have the best info) I don't really want to go moding things. I'm not that much of a power user, but now that the fan is running, I'm a little afraid to turn it off, and I need to order these things today so I can have them by Friday in case the fan craps out. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thanks!
macelius Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 have you tried lowering the temp that the fan kicks in at in the bios? prolly the fan is dying tho, mine turns on half speed (~3000rpm) at 25C and that usually keeps it under 45C, which is where i have it set to turn on full speed, then its really loud at ~6000rpm, but it rarely hits that, i have a well ventilated case btw. Evercool vc-re or vc-rf i think one twinkles other does not, or Vantec IceberQ, not sure which one of the models tho you will have to match up the distance btwn the pins, im sure someone else here knows, im also sure theres many threads on this, even one that shows wehre to shave the vantec a bit, try search function. c83 Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 Thanks for the information folks. I should add, that I contacted the DFI tech support about this, and one engineer gave me the link to the evercool fan. Angy (the guy on this board, not me) also sent me a link to an excellent step by step set of instructions to replace the fan. I appreciate the help, but I gotta say, I'm way, way pissed off by the shoddy workmanship. I mean, they might RMA the thing, but then what happens to me in the mean time? Not to mention the fact that if I damage the MB while replacing their broken fan, then my warenty is voided. That's total crap, for sure. So, if I was supposed to send back the entire MB (and wait weeks, no doubt for a replacement), then what? I've got to risk damaging my processor by removing it, and the fan, from the MB before shipment? And then they'd no doubt give me another MB with the same crappy fan on it. Can't say as I'd recomend this MB to anyone, especialy since there are LOTS of fan complaints and DFI has not addressed this very simple issue. macelius Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 true there are lots of complaints bout the fan, but this IS the SUPPORT forum after all, ppl come here with troubles, not with 'yay it works great' (tho sometimes they do that too). most people have no trouble with their fan, thers some posts here, but compared to the number of DFI boards sold with this fan, i bet its less than 1%. sometimes u get a faulty part, it happens, its weird theyre asking you to rma the whole board, i've read threads wehre DFI has sent ppl just the fan very promptly, without sending back the whole board, if your fan is faulty and you ask nicely they will prolly do that for you as well. three months now and my fan works great, tho it is loud as hell at full speed at 6000rpm, but half speed keeps the chipset plenty cool (under 45) so i set it at 45 and it never kicks in full speed, quieter than my proc at full speed, so no prollem there. i can think of at least three friends of the top of my head that have or had various dfi nf boards with the same fan for much longer and no trouble.
