copying c:

Ok, ive got one sata drive and an old ide, i currently only use the sata in my computer,

and i want to try out raid0,

my other sata should arrive soon, but in order to install raid ive goto have both sata drives clear right, so my new sata will obviously be formated when it comes, but the current sata will have windows on it etc, but i don't want to format it yet, i want to copy the entire contents onto the ide hd, so if somthing goes wrong while installing the raid i can just boot up from the ide drive,

but how do i do this? if i have both ide and sata connected up, and from my computer i copy the entire contents from the sata drive (c:) to the ide drive (d:), its stops about 5%, because it can't copy the windows files because they are in use,

so i take it ive goto to do it from dos, what command would i use,

say if the sata drive was C:

and i want to copy everything on it to

the ide drive D:

PowerQuest DriveImage 7.0 can do exactly that.

I use it to copy my C: drive to an other physical harddisk (including the MBR) and now whenever I f*** up windows on my primary disk I just press Escape during POST to get in the Boot menu and startup from the other disk and put back an image, which I made with this program as well, to the corrupted HD. This works awesome and saves me hours of mega boring OS installation time.

PowerQuest has been bought by Symantec so you may find a newer version which can do this as well on their site and I'm sure there are several other programs that can do this as well. Maybe one from Acronis. I just stick with what works for me.

Watch the language please !!

why cant i just copying the contents of drive c: to d:, surly thats possible?

Stop calling me surely! LOL

No, it's not possible. You either use drive imaging software or you perform a clean install. Copying the drive contents will not make the drive bootable or copy all the hidden and system files.

Of course, you can not believe us and try it yourself. Your choice.

Shirley is right! LOL ... ExRoadie that is. You have to use special disk imaging software to copy an active OS and MBR to another disk!

acronis true image 9 is great. you can create a boot CD with it that will work whether the software is actually installed on the PC or not. plus, you can create backup images that can be chopped up so that each piece fills up a dvd±r/w or cd-r/w. i got it just a coupla weeks ago and love it.
