I'm about to tear apart my 7800GTX, question.

Do I need to put AS5 on 8 RAM contacts or just the GPU?

What about that square black thing on the left that looks like a RAM contact but it's alone?

EDIT: I think they're called RAM contacts...but I'm probably wrong.

i wouldn't put AS5 on my vid card...I only use Ceramique (non-conductive)

the black thing on the left looks to be the VIVO or decoder chip...probably doesn't need a sink (if it didn't have a sink already)

for BGA RAM and using ramsinks, I use thermal pads (Zalman/OCZ ramsinks come with them, I use Chometrics or some such stuff that I got a free sample of)

AG is right that looks like a vivo chip...

But as far as I know the gf7's all have vivo built into the gpu it's self.

Where the gf6's only had vo built in.

I'm pretty sure it must be the dvi chip.

Which is kinda wierd too since the new gf7's are supposed to beable to do 2 times the res with dvi then what the previous cards could do..., then again maybe that's why it's on there.

Ceramic all the way, it'll last alot longer and your video card will be happy with it ;).

Btw, is that card a 128bit ver or something, witht he memory interface/crossbars?

Unless maybe the 512meg cards are 512bit and the 256meg ver's are 256bit...

I dn, but you only got half the memory bandwith there with that sort of card, I had no idea they made gf7's like that.

You got a giant heatsink for the mosfet/regulator thingys too.

Maybe you could add some ceramic to those as well, to help stabilize voltage to the card a tiny bit.

Edit:

Anyways that's 128megs on top of the card there unless they have double the density, I'm not sure if they make that but they probably do.

Thats' 128bit memory interface right there in any case, do you have memory on the back of the card?

I'm just asking out of curiosity.

Well that isn't my card. :D

I just found the pic online...it's supposidly a 7800GTX 256MB board.

I'm not sure if my card has memory on the back, it's sitting snugly in my case right now.

AS5 is not conductive. It is suspected to be capacitive by some.

I use Ceramique, too, mainly because it is easier to work with.

it is conductive in the sense that if you close any electrical gaps with it, it will short out electronics (i've seen many users do this as well as had it happen to me)

please make sure you have your info before claiming something is not true or only 'suspected' when there are hundreds if not more cases of users shorting out electronics with AS5

The point is somewhat moot anyhow as you need something to attach the sinks themselves so they don't fall off, which AS5 of course will not do. You may be able to get away with ceramique to hold them on, but I wouldn't. Just stick with the sticky pads already on most sinks, they hold pretty well. Otherwise get some of the permanent epoxy-like stuff from Arctic Silver, though it may prove extremely difficult to remove later if you should want to.

And as for the processor itself, stick with ceramique. :)

What do you mean the ram gets hot?

Mine don't get hot at all, I'm not joking.

I don't even have the heatsink touching them, some are out in the open, some are covered by the heatsink I have but not touching it.

The one I just touched that's out in the open, well it was'nt hot at all, it was cold to the touch running at 1200mhz.

You want me to run some benches or something at 1350?

I dn think I can really prove anythign by that, I dn have a temp prob thingy nor a cam(I wish I had a cam).

You guys get some decent heatsinks on the gpus and the memory won't get hot ;).

Heck, all I got on mine is a slightly lapped valcano 5 on mine, and it's still got deep scratches in it.

Using ceramic though, which I believe 100% is better then as5.

I'm not trying to come off rude or anything, just telling ya as5 is'nt great, and a big old heatsink does the job, rivals water I supposed compared to what most people get.

Load temps are in the lower 40's for me.

Without my 2nd panaflo on my north bridge and memory, I can run 550 core and 1350 memmory on this thing without artifacts.

No vmods.

Anyways the memory is'nt supposed to be hot.
