Windows XP Tweak Guide (video) *update 6/28/2006*

Recommended Posts

yep BlackViper is where most of those tweaks originate (services)

if you disable Help Center I think is what causes chm files not be read anymore (I never read those dumb things anyway, I just download PDF manuals or hit forums to find help lol)

i dont disable this because I have to share files across all machines usually (and I normally leave Server enabled @ automatic)

Disabling "Simple File Sharing" actually offers you more options such as group and user rights assignments and extended file security features, you should try it. I imagine they default "Simple File Sharing" so people don't have to worry about locking themselves out of their files accidentally (which is pretty easy to do). You may already know about this but just in case... ;)

I don't mess with any of those features because they are useless on a home network

a corporate network with permission levels and real administrators are the ones that get into using those features.

we, as consumer level users who play games, surf for porn, send email, start forum flame wars, etc, don't need such things (and if you think you do, that's ok to have that opinion, but all it does it end up complicating things for people who don't really understand and won't take the time to learn and that is a bad thing so we don't ever feel the need to use such permissions when it is only going to be one or two persons using a computer until it gets formatted and reloaded with windows again)

as for 'locking yourself out of a file' on a regular install of XP, if you have done such a thing, you are messing around with features that you should have never touched.

In all of my years of using computers, and all of the customers I have ever had (both business and residential), I have never had a customer, nor even heard of a customer 'locking himself out of his own files' other than forgetting their Windows password (and having set their user documents to Private).

I suppose someone somewhere did it, but I nor anyone else I know has ever done such a thing..which again leads my opinion back to 'if you do such a thing, you are fooling with things you should know better than to fool with' because you should never make a mistake that Windows is not an OS without some excellent security and administration features...*you just don't need to be messing with them if you are using your comp like most of us normal consumers do*

I too have only read about people getting locked out.

I made an internet kiosk at the hotel I work at and used a trick in XP where you deny the admin account all permissions to the group policy folder in system32, therefore leaving your admin account uneffected by the group policy (the account can't read it, and uses the default settings). This is a backdoor sort of way to get 2 policies on the same machine, and end up having an unrestricted admin account for the employees, and a guest account for, well, the guests.

If I made too many restrictions, and forgot to re-deny the g.p. folder - bingo, reformat time. But I have been careful and made it so even if I did lock myself out, I could get into the command line and disable the restrictions. I agree 95% of users do not need to turn simple file sharing off, just pointing out that it actually opens a whole new world of networking and administrative features. :)

hey angry games,

i saw that you were still able to connect to the internet after you disabled all of those services, but i was just wondering... i am behind a school network.. DANG THEM TO HECK... and we run through a buch of proxy crap and firewalls with lots of blocked ports etc... is this going to affect my ability to access the internet with a network like this? im assuming its not going to matter, but i just wanted to make sure so that if i DO screw something up, i dont have to go back through and check all the services back to where they were to get it to work again.

ALSO, is there a way to import services settings? like export them to the text file it allows you to do, and then import them later? thanks for your help.

most functions still work after disabling a service because the service actually controls a more complex function (does that make sense? lol).

ie: you can disable computer browser because it doesn't actually control browsing for computers manually, it control automatic browsing (ie your comp senses it is on a network so it will immediately begin browsing all the network to find any shares etc).

I don't have a clue about university networks other than most of the services I disable in teh video won't affect your connectivity at all.

as for import/export services...not to my knowledge...it would be kinda cool though so I wouldn't have to do it each time (or do an Nlite slipstream with all my drivers and all the services disabled lol)

" If you get a chance, I've got the other tutorial videos that need a home also if you feel like getting them up on some mirrors ;)"

Angry - I can provide some additional download for another video; just need to know which one and how to get it myself to upload. My mirror of the tweak video is running well within my bandwidth limitations. Lark
