Dual core gaming issues

So I've overclocked my Opteron 170 with the specs below (11/25 bios on eXpert board). Dual SuperPI32M stable, dual Prime95 stable for 20+ hours, Memtest 1.65 ran for 18 hours with no memory errors. I get 26k in 3dMark03, 12k in 3dMark05. I have two 7800GT's in SLI with multi-GPU rendering enabled. I have tried 7 different driver versions, with OCing and without on the video cards.

I have installed the dual-core XP fixes and ran the reg patches. I've tried launching games with only one core set for that process ...

FarCry, Half-Life 2, UT2004 ... I can max out all the settings on these games and they run beautifully.

Quake IV, F.E.A.R., Doom 3 ... I max out the settings and get less than 7fps. I've tried the BETA dual-core 1.0.5 patch for Q4 and it still happens.

These games are supposed multi-threaded ... I wonder if that's the issue. So I started trying settings on Quake 4.

The game only lags when I run it on Ultra Quality. If I keep everything else the same, except drop it to High Quality, the thing works beautifully.

I can live with this if need be. But I would prefer to have it on Ultra Quality.

Anyone know what is up? Any advice at all? ANYTHING??

Oh, I also removed the OC on the proc and did a fresh load of Windows -- same thing. I'm so lost ...

In further testing, I ran End-It-All and killed all non-critical processes. I also disconnected all but my main hard drive and one DVD-RW drive and tried everything out. It made no difference.

I've been searching the web and can't find anyone with an issue like this -- for them, if they use WinLauncher or something and force the program to use only Core 0 or Core 1, it fixes the issue ... but not with me.

On my A8N-SLI Deluxe with a 3500+ and 2GB of Ballistix Tracer I was able to max out Quake IV and FEAR and they ran great. What's up?

On quake 4 ulta mode needs 2gb of system RAM to get the results you want.

Even with 2 GTX cards at 512 wont do it. Read this on a Quake site somewhere.

I have only one gtx card but 2gb ram so I could not test it myself.

I agree, most game today require 2g rams to run smoothly: doom 3 and FEAR .special u run dual core.I heard someone said b4"dual core and 1g ram will be bottleneck" but what the hell, I ran dual core with 1g rams myself. work fine with me :)

even u have 2 7800GT 256M in SLI. it won't make any different because in SLI mode 256 + 256 = 256m :)

would u want to spend extra $250+ for 2g rams to get your 7fps different :)

The RAM could be the issue, but for some reason I doubt it. When I check my memory usage during gameplay, less than 1GB is taken up when attempting Ultra Quality. Maybe I'll give it a shot though, as I have 4 512MB sticks of Ballistix Tracer sitting here ... hopefully they'll clock to DDR480 ...

I have yet to fully test FEAR, but I think that it will yield similar results: Maximum quality lags, but one step below while maxing out everything else will run like a charm.

I'll try the 2GB RAM idea later this week and see.

Quake IV worked on Ultra Quality with 2GB Ballistix Tracer, but I had to drop it on the 5/6 divider so it's at DDR400. Unsure if I can stably clock it higher.

So which is better, 2GB of DDR400 (4 512's -- 10,138 3DMarks, Ultra Quality) or 1GB DDR480 (2 512 -- same latency's -- 12,208 3DMarks, no Ultra Quality)?

That's purely an opinion question ........ I think I"m gonna switch back to my GEiL 1GB kit, but what does someone else think?

those games run fine on my sys. Need For Speed: Most Wanted jitters like a bastard though, haven't figured this one out.

to your topic.. have you tried messing with the two "errata" options in the BIOS? i disabled errata 123 and performance increased. not sure if it would help you or not, but worth a try.

I have not because I had no idea what they were. I'll play with that tonight.

I think I'm going to stick with my Geil RAM at 480 for now. High Quality vs Ultra Quality is not that different, and I still had some lag in Ultra ... Next year I may upgrade to 2x 1GB sticks of something awesome, but for now I'm happy. I gotta upgrade other things now, like my camera ... mmmmm lenses....
