PSU or ClawHammer ?

Recommended Posts

I posted in a different thread bout this weird problem I have:

When in 3D games - after a while, +12V voltage starts to climb down... when it hits below 11V - the computer SHUTS DOWN. it only happens in 3D apps.

Some said it's my SEVENTEAM 550W EAJ - PSU.

Angry_Games said it oculd be a conflict between ClawHammer CPU core and 2x1024 mem.

I tried to put the MEM FREQ SET to 166 (5:06) - and it seemed to help...

until today - when there was another shutdown...

But anyhow, it seems that it took much more time for the voltage to drop after I did the change...

I don't know now - what hsould I try next?

can it be my PSU ??

this is the specs for it:

http://www.seventeam.com.tw/front/d...?lang=eng&ID=49

OUTPUT

VOLTAGE OUTPUT CURRENT REGULATION

------------------ MIN(A) MAX(A) ------ LOAD LINE

+5V -------------- 1.5 ----- 30 ---------- ±5% ±1%

+3.3V ------------ 0.5 ----- 30 ---------- ±5% ±1%

+12V1 ------------ 1.5 ---- 18 ---------- ±5% ±5%

+12V2 ------------ 1.5 ----- 18 --------- ±10% ±1%

-12V --------------- 0 ----- 0.5 --------- ±10% ±1%

+5VSB ------------- 0 ----- 2.0 ---------- ±5% ±1%

the SMARTGUARDIAN show these voltages on normal (non 3d game, just windows)

performance:

CPU=1.47 LDT=1.16 ATX+5=4.99 DRAM=2.59

ATX+12=11.83 NB+1.5=1.48

ATX+3.3=3.32

VBAT+3=3.1

Copme to think of it - 11.83V is the highest I've ever seen my "ATX +12V" setting.

is that normal?

Pls Pls help - I'm out of ideas...

My problem is that I dont know if its the PSU or a conflict between ClawHammer and my 2x1024RAM configuration...

I will change my SEVENTEAM PSU to a ChannelWell KMG 450W PSU, and see if the problem persists.

the KMG PSU specs are here:

http://www.cwt.com.tw/english/2_product/1_detail.php?ID=412

 it should support my configuration - though its wattage is a little less than what I have now...

hope this puts me on the right track...

if u have any other idea what it might be, let me know

the KMG PSU sounds significantly worse than wht u have. I don't think it will help prove anything. Ideally you want apower supply such as Recommended! - NF4 Ultra/SLI Mobos:PowerSupplies Would agree with msmolt smart guardian does understate 12v voltage I find soundx98 - MBM Posts #1 UPDATED December 11th, 2005

Have u tried running with asingle memory module & see if the problem recurs. If it doesn't then it looks like Angry_Games is right.

luck:)

I dont see that helping for it dose not meet the 480 AMP requirment

Yes, but this is what I could get my hands on - If it fix the problem, I can RMA the SEVENTEAM, as it is a good manufacturer...

I apologize if I come off as a complete NOOB on this one:

Can I run a Dual Channel Mobo with just 1 Module????

Also, if Angry Games is right, how come CPC / Freq Set changes didn't help ?!?!?

it won't run as dual channel but. if you don't get the issues it indicates that Angry Games hypothesis is correct. Switch off rig & remove power. Then remove module nearest to CPU.

As you said

CPC / Freq Set changes didn't help ?!?!?
seems 2 have helped but may require more tweaking.

luck

 The fact that the Freq Set tweaking helped partailly (problem persisted, but the system would run stable longer periods of time before shutting down) - led me to the conclusion that I might have more than one problem on my hands.

With aching heart I went to remove my SEVENTEAM 550W PSU with a misley 450W channelwell technology PSU - just for testing to see how it goes, when I noticed the following: !!!

The 5V/12V plug, the one nearest the CPU - wasn't connected to the MoBo at all! It just rested near its desired location.... :(

I know, I know - it's the most basic noob thing to checked! And I checked it 2 timed beofre, but not hard enough, I guess. Believe me, my 1st thought wasn't "Yurikka! I solved the problem", but rather "Jeez - how could I face those DFI-STREET guys and tell them i've been wasting their times on the most noob problems of all"... :)

However, connecting the Plug didn't solve the problem, :( although the Voltage dropping itself, once it occured - took longer to happen (instead of dropping from 12 to 10 in 3 seconds, it took something like 8-10 seconds).

Then I reapplied Angry Games tweaking to the Freq Set, and BINGO! I've been running my system 2 dyas now and it's smooth ("I'm not PLAYING honey! I'm testing the hardware!!!") :)

However, if I understood what I did in the Freq set - My RAM is now limited to 166MHZ instead of 200Mhz No?

What's my best solution - adding 2 more for total 4GB ?

Will ClawHammer Accept 4x1024 at 200MHZ with no problem?

And besides, am I losing this much speed over this tweak??

  • 2 weeks later...

Help!!!!! :(

After 2 weeks of no problems - the problem has come back!agaon, in 3D games - the 12V falls down until the computer shuts down!

I dbl checked - all PSU plugs connected to the Mobo,

and the DRAM Freq setting is manually configured to 166Mhz - like Angry Games suggested, to bypass the ClawHammer vs. 2x1024 Issue.

Everything workled fine for 2 weeks, why the sudden comeback ?!?!?

should I RMA my PSU - is he the guilty one???

PLS ADVISE!!!!
