DragonTattooz Posted December 16, 2005 Posted December 16, 2005 Smartguarian says my PWMIC temp is 86C. That seems awefully high. Is there a heatsink I can buy for the PWMIC? I intend to actively cool my RAM, and I think the airflow for that should pull some of the heat off of the heatsink since they are so close. I'm not really sure what the PWMIC is/does, but it must be important if the temps are being monitored by Smartguardian. Any suggestions? Guest Dynamic Posted December 16, 2005 Posted December 16, 2005 I believe that is your Power Regulators, correct me anyone if i'm wrong. That is pretty F'n hot bro! Mine won't ever go over 48C so i don't know what's going on with your setup. Post your overclock setup please and the voltages you're using for the board's components, you know? Post your overclock setup please and the voltages you're using for the board's components, you know? 270x10 @ 1.65v (1.5v x 110%) RAM @ 2.6v Chipset 1.7v- Smartguardian indicating 45C Case temps showing 28C I verified my rail voltages with my calibrated Fluke 87 True RMS DMM. I have not verified actual voltages on the IC's themselves. Smartguardian seems to indicate a few degrees high. But even if it's 5C high, that still indicates 81C on the PWMIC. One last thing- I have been running Prime95 on both cores for about 14 or 15 straight hours as of this writing. I'm sure that has something to do with the high temp as my CPU is running the hottest I've seem @ 38C. When I'm not running a torture test the CPU never goes over 31C- and is normally around 28C. I never checked the PWMIC until this afternoon after reading something in a thread about PWMIC temps. I don't really use Smartguardian because I have a thermal controller. Angry_Games Posted December 16, 2005 Posted December 16, 2005 put a quiet 80mm fan blowing over your PWMIC area and your temps will drop quite a bit 86C on the PWMIC tells me that you probably have very awful airflow in your case/setup, and that is especially true of watercooling (I use DD watercooling and have seen this very scenario myself). Watercooling means you no longer have ambient airflow from your cpu heatsink lowering temps in surrounding areas...now you more than likely have stagnant areas that are generating heat but no airflow or insufficient airflow over heat-generating areas dual core cpu's also tend to work the pwmic power regulators much much more than single core cpu's, and especially when overclocking
Vulkanonistix Posted December 16, 2005 Posted December 16, 2005 With a good enough air flow, you could drop your PWMIC temperature down to 36 degrees celsius. But of course, you have to have your room kind of cool. I live in a cold place so, the tempertaure remain constantly at 34 degrees celsius. I would also recommend buying MIPS mosfet watercooling blocks especially designed for lnaparty boards.
Guest Dynamic Posted December 16, 2005 Posted December 16, 2005 I usually run prime95 for 8-9hrs to find stability. Have you tried backing down slightly on your Vcore? Well, running prime for that many hours can build up heat just like that! If you really think about it, this board is one of the boards that requires so much power from 4 different connectors so the PWR is going to be shooting high i guess. BTW, you don't happen to have a side case panel with a fan blowing on your M/B do you?
DragonTattooz Posted December 17, 2005 Posted December 17, 2005 I went to CompUSA and bought a heatsink that works on the PWMIC and I bought a fan to cool this Ballistix RAM. The fan is blowing air over the heatsink and my PWMIC temps have not gone over 45C while running Prime95! Also, my Ballistix are running REAL cool now. I don't know what the temps are, but they don't even feel warm, let alone hot. I also did the mod where you remove the heatsink from the CPU core- WOW! My temps have dropped to 24C idle, and while running Prime95 they went to 28C. It doesn't seem to have helped the OC, but I haven't really played with it too much. Prime95 just failed @ 290x10 and I just got the computer running a little while ago. My memory OC seems to have jumped a little with the active cooling though. I got DDR600 3-3-3-8 1T without failing test 5 in Memtest, but that's just a preliminary run to see if the fan made any difference. I won't call it stable until I run a torture test on it, but before the active cooling it would give a gazillion errors @ DDR600.
