Boot stops at processor display

Recommended Posts

This has me puzzled. Everything was working just fine, did a reboot after defragging root C (XPP), boot sequence halts after displaying the processor type. Everything appears to be running as it should with the exception of the keyboard. It is intialized right before the processor info is displayed and then is gone.

Have tried bare minimum boot, removing the battery for a short period (probably less than 3 minutes), letting the thing sit for over 30 minutes with no power (you know, OFF). It still won't get past the processor display. I'm stumped. Oh yea, it does beep once between the display of the vid card info and the processor info. Other than that, nothing. It simply hoses.

To the best of my knowledge there have been no power surges, earthquakes, meteors or terrorist attacks. I put the system together in January (I think) and it has operated near perfection (especially when booted in Linux) since then.

This is my main computer, i.e., all of my website info and development work, email, everything important (like some cheese with that whine?) is on it. I need it back.

Ideas?

Try this real quick. Turn off the Power supply. Hold down the insert key, turn on Power supply, then hit the power button. If the Post screen comes up hit the delete and go into the bios. If it doesn't I didn't see where you have tried to clear CMOS by moving the jumper. That would be the next step

Oops. I did forget to mention clearing CMOS. Made no difference. Well, except now it stalls displaying the LanParty logo.

Tried pressing the Insert key using the sequence you described. Also did not work. This is a bummer. System isn't a year old yet.

Accepting all ideas. Not ready to buy new stuff.

This is wierd. Have already tried the mem stick swap. The keyboard is USB but am already using ps/2 adapter.

Here is the wierd part. Walked away after one boot attempt with the system still trying the memory test. Came back about 10 minutes later and it had booted into Linux (duel boot). So, I did a shutdown and reboot of Linux. About 10 minutes after going into the memory test, it once again booted into Linux. I am using StartCom Linux 4.0. It has always booted to the desktop without error. Always. This time it was kicking out USB errors until I forced it to continue. It then booted to the desktop and everything seemed fine.

Rebooted yet again, same sequence of events except this time I told it to boot XP Pro. Seemed to take a little longer but booted without error. That I could see anyway. XP Pro did recognize new hardware, my printer, which was installed back in January, and the USB storage device, also installed months ago.

Since it is slowing to a crawl during the memory test, I guess the memory could be going (already gone?) south. Again, I'm puzzled.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. This is the most helpful forum of the many I rely on.

Still, I will accept more ideas.

Couldn't tell you anything about voltage, amps or anything else. Do not currently have a reliable meter and haven't poked around at that level in years. I have been testing the bootup times. Almost exactly (oxymoron?) 11 minutes from power on to the start of actual boot.

Have pressing business out of town so I won't be able to mess with it until Tuesday or Wednesday. I'll find a VOHM somewhere and find out what is going on there. Thanks for all the ideas. I have an idea but it will have to wait til later.

Enjoy your weekends.

Stephen

Considering all the drives etc in your rig,the 12v rail seems too low.I was running a 560W thermaltake psu with 22 amp 12v.It ran ok till i replaced the 9800 Pro

video card with a 6800GT then lots of problems.Replaced the Tt psu with a OCZ 520W (33 amp 12v) and no more problems
