Freeze

Recommended Posts

I'm getting constant crashes when i'm doing various task. The system is not overclocked and is set at default. Used prime95 and was stable for over 10 hours. But for example i try to extract a rar file, it suddenly freezes and i have to restart.

I've tried using different rams from my other computer and the problem still occurs. Also tried a different powersupply, still no luck.

Mushkin 2x512 tccd -->switched to 512 samsung

Seasonic s12 600w -->switched to antec 450w smartpower

I read somewhere that it maybe the sata hard drive i'm using. I never did install any drivers for it ex: pressing f6? (Inserted windowsxp and fresh install)

help?

Forgot to mention, i've updated my bios to 6/23/2005.

Please update your Sig to reflect your BIOS revision...

You're on the right track.... does sound like a hard drive issue, especially if you've Primed your system without error.

No, you don't need to install any drivers for a windows install unless you need to setup a raid array.

Extracting files from a zip or rar file is disk intensive... not sure (since it's been so long) if SiSoft Sandra has a disk testing program in the shareware version, but you may want to find and run some disk diagnostic programs (both clean boot and windows based) to see if it is indeed your HD.

Oooo yeah.... forgot. Do a search on Maxtor (here on these forums). I recall something about needing firmware updates to resolve some funky issues between Maxtor and our wonderful boards (although my Maxtor runs just fine, maybe it's just for 3.0 drives???).

The freezing could also be a registry error. I had my experiences installing bunch of programs at once and tried to run windows xp without registry cleaning nor compacting. Results were terrible, I froze upon closing a Java applet window and I had to restart my whole computer evrytime. I ran registry clean and everything works fine.
