m c Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 I screwed up. Again. Last night, after successfully piecing together my first build I installed windows xp. This morning, I thought I'd try to reinstall and change some settings (I have no idea why I chose to do this considering I have no idea what I'm doing). This is precisely where things went haywire. As the machine boots, I come to a screen that gives me the option to enter Windows XP or Windows XP Setup. Through Windows XP Setup, setup checks the system and then proceeds to ask me if I want to overwrite or start a new folder (other than Windows). I tell it to overwrite. From there it scans the disk and tells me 'Setup cannot copy file: hraidsk1'. If I tell it to skip the file (as my only option to advance) I keep getting the same message but countless other file names. However, if I just try to enter Windows, it tells me, 'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32hall.dll' It then tells me to 're-install a copy of the above file.' Help. Please. I feel, well, stupid.
nortius_maximus Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 hold on i am quite tired but i imagine you are sitting clicking refresh until someone helps you out (computers can be horrible sometimes). trying to remember how windows is installed. so you put the winXP disk in and choose to boot from CD. then you get the choice(or am i missing something) to install windows or repair it whatever. first thing i would do is delete all the partitions including the one with windows on it. then create your partitions how ever many you want. always format the one for windows to go on. (NEVER with the quick option as this does not check for errors) now install windows on the freshly formatted partition. you should get a clean install now without any hassle me thinks. this description is for non raid i am not sure if you are using raid or not. good luck
m c Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Ok, I changed to boot settings in the BIOS to boot from the cd. So far, it seems to be working. I'll be back with updates. Thank you kindly for your help.
m c Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 To address your last question, I'm embarassed to say I have no idea if I'm using RAID. In fact, I don't know what it is. If it's something you have to go out of your way to do, then I'm guessing I'm not. So far so good. Old partition deleted. New partition created. Windows seems to be installing.
