Geil RAM Problem

Hi,

 

I have just got some Geil 2GB Dual Channel Value Ram to replace my old corsair stuff.

 

The problem is, the only way to boot into XP every time is to reset the cmos. If i do not do this it tells me a windows file is missing or corrupt.

 

Are there problems with geil ram, do i need to change some setting or is the ram not working properly?

When I tried my 2x512mb Geil Value memory sticks I found that the only way that they would work was to manually input the memory timings....

8-4-4-2.5

Then they would both work, leaving them on auto for the SPD values to be read produced timings beyond their capability, at least that's how it seemed to me.

 

You will need to check the timings that are applicable for your memory sticks.

Make sure you do this

 

Make sure that all 4 power connectors are plugged into the board

# 24pin ATX connector.

# 4pin +12v P4 connector, near the ATX connector.

# Floppy power connector, under the CPU socket.

# Hard drive power connector, on top the chipset fan.

 

Plug your GFX card in the PCIe slot

# Make sure it is inserted correctly into the slot.

# Connect any power cables to it if one is required.

 

Clear your CMOS for 10 minutes

# Remove the power cord from the back of the power supply.

# Move the CMOS jumper to the clear position and leave it there for 10mins.

# Make sure you move it back to the save position after.

 

Power your PC and enter the BIOS

# Change the following,

- 1st = Floppy (if you have one)

- 2nd = CD rom

- 3rd = HDD

# Save & Exit

 

Now memtest should be running?

# Let it run for 3 hours or more

# If you get any errors instantly stop and try 1 stick at a time.

 

After Memtest or 3 hours, press escape or reboot the PC

# Enter the BIOS and disable Run memtest86+ in the GENIE settings bios menu.

 

Now you can flash the BIOS (only if memtest had 0 errors)

# Download the BIOS you want.

- Use either the bootable CD or a bootable floppy disk

Tmod's bootable CD

Make your own bootable floppy disk

FlashXpress

 

Now reinstall your operating system/windows XP

# Boot from the CD

# Install + quick format

 

Once in windows you must install the following and in this order

# SP2 if it is not integrated to your CD. (download full installer here, burn it to a cd)

Get SP2 here

# Restart and install the nVidia chipset drivers, (You could burn it to the SP2 CD).

Get nVidia chipset drivers here

- Do not install the nvidia firewall/network access manager software

- Do not install the IDE SW driver

* Note, if you install these Audio drivers you do not need to install the RealTek ones.

# Restart the PC and wait a bit

 

Next you can install your GFX card drivers

# Download them here, maybe burn it to the same CD as the XP SP2 one.

Get ATi drivers here

Get nVidia drivers here

# Restart your PC and wait a bit

 

Now you should be ready to install your other applications.

# You can install the Marvell driver now (if you want)

# Install other software.

Ill reset the cmos and make those bios changes, and see if they help. Then ill run mem test (i wont change that setting) later while i sleep. If it comes to it, ill have to try a reinstall, just out of intrest, did u write that yourself or did u get it from somewhere, if so where?

The memory is dud, after 10 minutes in dual channel i got 2 mem test errors, in one stick i got 2 after 10 minutes, and i stoped the other 1 at 40 000 after a few minutes lmao, it was going up fast!!

 

Im sending it back for a replacement

Just soo you know it's no problem with your memory's, i had exact same problem like you and this is either becouse those sticks need a bump in voltage too get along with the timings you have or Setup the exact timings for those sticks. Remember set everything else to AUTO. (at first)

 

The bios 704 can't even boot with Geil Ultra-X BH5 for an example becouse some settings in the bios are NOT for BH 5 UTT.

 

My solution too this problem was too use old OEM memory and set att settings then install the Ultra-X and bang they worked flawless.

I set it all to auto apart from the options that were not stated apert from these

These seem to be locked and so i cannot change them, how do i unlock them?

They can't be locked.

 

You should be able to press enter on them and choose the values you want.

Go down a bit more in the menu.

 

Dont try to change the blue text, scroll down and change the white text.

Ok, i ge that now. Also, the memory timings that you told me to change are not in the same order as they are on the stickr on the ram. Is this just DFI being different or are they wrong?
