Sony Dru-800a

Recommended Posts

Hi, since I have upgraded my rig, my brand new SONY DRU-800A dvd-rw stopped working. Brand new = I have only burned 1 dvd so far, purchased it recently. Anyway my problem is, the drive is recognized properly in bios and in windows , but whenever i insert a disc in it (cd/dvd) the system hangs and wont let me do anything unless I remove the disc from the drive.

Any ideas what is causing this and a possible solution? I refuse to believe the drive is broken, it has to be something else.

Help plz, the search function didn't help me

First of all, you can feel bad if you paid more than $40 for it, cuz it is actually a LiteOn SOHW-1693s. Still a good burner, but Sony tends to jack up the price a bit when they put their badge on it.

But perhaps you just need to perform a firmware flash on it, and that may make it right. If it doesn't, you can always reflash back ot factory flash and return it. For more info, visit: http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html Lots of info there, as well as the software you need to flash it.

I flashed my SOHW 812s to DL before there were any DL burners on the market. Their stuff over there is top-notch from what I have seen. Just be sure to get the factory flash if you happen to flash one of thier files, so oyu can put it back if it doesn't fix the issue.

Good luck!

Koeman,

FWIW,I'm having the exact same problem w/ my sli-dr (N4D623-3 BIOS) and both a Plextor 716A (latest firmware) and a Liteon cd burner. The only way they will work at all is by forcing them into pio mode, and even then it bogs the system.

Also, both drives and cables work perfectly fine on my P4P800-D.

Edit:Added sig in post #6.

You could try to uninstall your ide controller drivers in Device Manager. Reboot and let windows reinstall them. I had the same problem that a reinstall fixed. This may not help but its worth a try if you haven't already.

I was having odd problems with my BenQ 1640 drive and ASPI stuff - got it fixed.

First, the best place I've found for anything optical drive related is club.cdfreaks.com - they have forums for every brand of drive and LOTS of people posting and helping.

My problem was I'd inadvertantly installed the NF4 IDE PATA IDE drivers. I went into Device Manager/IDE controllers section. Right click on anything that is NOT SATA related (you want to keep the NVidia SATA stuff) and select Update Driver.

Choose "No" (don't search Windows Update, "...specific location..." (Advanced), "Don't Search". Uncheck "Show Compatible" and go find Microsoft/Primary IDE Channel. This will get you the stock Windows XP IDE driver. Restart, it'll redetect some stuff and you may be fixed.

I'd be careful doing this if I had anything but optical drives on the IDE - if your boot drive is on IDE and you go messing with it, you could wind up not booting. But if only optical drives, worst case put it back if it doesn't work. This fixed my weird problems with my BenQ & ASPI issues.

No luck here, however,It did make me think for a second that it was working properly by automatically setting the mode to pio.Grrr.

Koeman,have you made any progress?

I recently had the same problems when I replaced my dvd-rom with a new NEC 3540. The 3450 worked flawlessly, but my DRU500A started having the problems similar to what was stated by the original poster.

I too tried the PIO only mode, it worked and the system started "seeing" the discs in the DRU500A, but the performance hit was unbearable.

Rather than uninstalling the IDE controller (that the CD-RW is connected to), I uninstalled the CD-RW itself.... actually, uninstalled both CD-RWs from device manager and rebooted (after resetting DMA if available in the controller advanced properties). System came back up and saw both CD-RW's and the discs in them.

About 2 days later, the DRU500A was again locking up my system until IT was done reading (or trying to) the disc that was inserted.

Rather than futz around with it anymore, I reloaded my system image (Thank God for Ghost!). It's been over a 2 weeks since "ghosting" my PC, and the Sony has not given me anymore problems.

ps: i feel bad already :)

Imagine how I feel.... I paid $400+ for the DRU500A :tooth:

Good Luck

Sort of elementary...but I assume you have jumpered your opticals as master and slave.

yes, they are jumpered properly.

I have tried LanceDiamond's suggestion but without success. Gonna try setting them to PIO mode, see how bad it is....If the drive is broken within 2 weeks with only having burned 1 dvd so far, then no comments :/ I got this dvd-rw without making any research before, just saw it at a store and bought it coz I really needed one...:(

I will keep you updated if I manage to solve the problem, which I doubt but who knows......fingers crossed......
