need some help here.

my chip isnt stable at 305x10 at all. despite raising to vcore to 1.5990 at 1 point.

this is frustrating. fails occt and prime95 with 90secs

It probably isn't going to run at 3050MHz.

0550 VPMW

heh from 2.7ghz to 2.8ghz is about a 0.15v jump 1.45v at 2.7 1.6v at 2.8, going to try between 1.55v(it fails) and 1.6v now to see if i can drop it.

3ghz is bootable and superpi-able but only at 1.65v+ and prime insta fails :P

Wow, I'd expect more from a 0550 vpmw. Sure it's not the memory hold you back? Sometimes it's the timings that cause prime to fail instantly. Just a thought....

I just got a 170 from Newegg today, and it's a CCBWE 0546 MPM. I tried Googling that and I didn't get any relative hits so it sounds like an oddball chip. I will install it tomorrow. Hopefully it'll clock well :).

Edit: I opened the box and it came with the nice 4 heatpipe AMD cooler. I'm thinking about comparing it with my CNPS-7700 for kicks.

Update on the chip: I popped it in and noticed how cool running it was at stock idle, 32 C in a 28 C room. That's a good sign I suppose :). I was also surprised that the stock voltage was 1.31. So far, it's gone from 2.0 to 2.45 with the voltage untouched, and I'm trying to get it to 2.5, but it keeps locking up if I jump there. I guess I have to ease it in a bit. Now my room cooled off a lot so I suppose this is the time to really push it :P.

I'm feeling pretty optimistic about this chip so far. I'm thinking I may be limited by temperatures at this rate though. I don't want to run it at like 55-57 C all the time. I'll try bumping it up to 1.4v and see where that takes me.

Edit: It's hitting 53-55 C at only 2.65 GHz and 1.44 volts, and the PWM IC reading is just a degree or so lower. I'm not going any higher unless there's a way for me to really bring down the temperatures. How much better is a CNPS-9500, TT Big Typhoon, or XP/SI-120 over a CNPS-7700?

here's a thing i found on steppings and their likelihood of reaching 3ghz

Opteron 165:

CCB1E 0550VPMW

CCB1E 0605XPMW

CCB1E 0606VPMW

CCB1E 0608MPMW

CCB1E 0609FPMW

CCBBE 0610DPMW

CCBBE 0615XXXX

Opteron 170:

CCBWE 0550UPMW <- this one is the exception to the rule, this stepping actually has quite a few total duds that can't exceed 2.7ghz. Still, I myself have owned one that did 3ghz.

CCB1E 0550VPMW

CCB1E 0609FPAW

Honorable Mention:

CCBWE 0530TPMW -> most of them cant quite hit 3ghz, more like 2.9-2.95.

CCBWE 0546XPMW -> OK stepping, 2.85-2.9ghz average

CCBWE 0609FPAW -> Do not confuse with the CCB1E 0609FPAW, which is a better CPU. This CCBWE version seems to be a 2.9ghz average.

KNOWN steppings to AVOID if you want at least 2.9ghz:

CCBWE 0607_____(Any processor of that week)

CCBWE 0602_____(Any processor of that week)

CCBWE 0551_____(Any processor of that week)

CCBWE 0546MPMW

CCBWE 0543TPMW

CCBWE 0534SPMW

I seem to have missed the boat on these 939 Opterons. Would it be a good plan to wait for the current users to ditch them, thus scoring cheap. Or will they be out classed by the next gen of video cards?
