Most new software firewalls are written to work in conjunction with the XP Firewall. As in you can run both.

The XP Firewall is really pretty crappy and doesnt do a good job by istelf.

The new Zone Alarm Pro works in conjuction with it or by itself. Also NVidia's software (pretend hardware) Firewall also works side by side with XP Firewall.

But if you even use NVidia's firewall then you should be shot and then slapped in that order.... :)

However, If you are using a third party firewall solution its usually best to turn off the XP Firewall and just use the third party firewall. Like I said the XP firewall is really crappy and only protects you from incoming traffic. most outgoing traffic will still go out regardless of you running XP firewall or not. So its best to disable it totally imho.

IMO software firewall is usless and a pain in the a$$ if you have a router, if you don't hav a router then it's just a pain in the a$$ but not usless. I was having virus problems before because I had the dmz thing set on my computer so it was letting all traffic through and my computer was exposed. I forgot dmz was on though and I installed a software firewall and I was getting thousands of intrusions being blocked, but as soon as I turned off dmz and I was protected by the router again I was fine and it stopped, since there were no intrusions anymore I uninstalled the software firewall because it was making my computer take forever to start up and taking up resources.

Using a software and hardware firewall is too much IMO. The conflicts alone and the resource hogging of the software firewall were enough to turn me away from them and get a d-link router. Trouble and attack free for almost 8 month now with DSL. I also have DMZ enabled but for only one IP address for either the PSP or a PS2. No problems with it, it's been on for maybe 2 months.

Software firewalls do have thier uses, I personally dont use one, as I like my hardware doing it. But the advantage of software firewalls is that you can block traffic on an app level, which you cannot do with a router. Like I said I dont have the need to use one so I dont, but I can see the uses for them. Just not for the Nvidia one... that is the most bloated, poorly written, unstable peice of crap I have ever had the misfortune of ever installing..

Alternately, you can get an old PC to perform stateful firewall inspection. Just put an additional ethernet card in it so it has two ports in it and install any number of software packages from Linux based to stuff like Checkpoint Firewall-1. Just a thought...
