Mike999 Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 So im the brand new and very happy user of a new DFI Ultra - D and athlon64 3200. I'm using a mix of new and used parts for this computer, everything other than the case, CPU and mobo are from my old eMachine rig. My system is listed below, but i forgot to add that my PSU is a HEC Group Silent 385. I ran the memtest on it for 4 hours and had it run counterstrike source with HLtv overnight, right after that i checked my core temp and it was at 38 degrees celcius. From what I have been reading, generally if the temp is below 50, then its probably good to run 24/7. So after that I decided to toy with overclocking a bit, but I didnt want to mess with RAM timings, or voltages. (I believe messing with those requires more power, which i pretty much dont have). I managed to get it to 2150 mhz just changing the FSB to 215, and it ran great. I ran memtest86 for 6 hours and it was good, and it was fine to play counterstrike and 3dmark. I checked the temp again with aida and it listed the temp as 41 degrees. I inched up further and further, and managed to get up as far as 231 mhz on the FSB before the computer wouldnt boot anymore. I didnt stress test it or anything between the 215 and the 231, every 3 mhz change I just ran the CS:S stress test, then 3DMark, then checked the tempurature. At 229 the temp was at 46 degrees. Ive since just dropped back down to the 215 mark because so far it seems pretty stable, and I will leave it here until I see any signs of instability, at which point ill probably drop back down to stock. So I guess my question is: Is there any way for my to push the limits a little more without changing voltages?
tatts Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 are you using a divider on your ram? & what psu is that, may be holding you back. also, dont worry too much about voltages, 1V wont cause much harm to the cpu, im happy to run mine 24/7 on 1.5v. its 1.65V and above when you start pushing your luck
Mike999 Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 to be honest, i dont really know anything about the power supply. I bought it last year for my old computer because it was on sale. I do believe its a decent unit though. its quite heavy (much heavier than the 400 watt one that came with my case, which is why I used it instead of the cheap one that came with the case). about the RAM divider, no. I dont have a divider. Its a single stick of PC3200 value RAM from crucial. I kind of resigned myself to live with it until I can scrap up enough for a couple dual-channel 2gb kits. I was basically thinking that I will live with whatever I can get for now because spending money on something cheap is kind of a waste IMO. I think I will just wait until probably christmas and then get either 2 nice Corsair Dual channel 2gb kits or 2 OCZ platinum dual channel 2gb kits (4 gb total, may aswell max it out, hopefully windows wont be a pain for me)
