Raid Problems with Ide Drives?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

First my setup. I am using the tictac 504_R1 bios with my board. I have a 3 drive array consisting for 2 Sata WD drives, and 1 IDE WD drive. My problem, is that when I attempt to connect another drive to the system, The IDE WD drive the array does not show up, causing the array not to boot. I tried the drive as master by its self on the Secondary IDE channel. I tried it as slave in conjuction with my dvd burner. I have tried it as slave on the primary ide channel with the WD drive. The drive is detected by the post, and the bios, but the WD drive that is in the array is not. In the nvidia raid menu. I did disable the entire secondary ide channel from the raid, and I disabled the slave raid for the primary ide channel. This makes no sense... If i disconnect the drive, the functionality returns to normal, and the array is detected correctly. I have verified that the drive is jumpered correctly multiple times(Like I said, it is being recognized by the bios and post when on the secondary ide channel). Is this a firmware problem involving IDE raid? Has anyone had a similar problem? Can you just not add another drive to your system using the onboard ide controllers if you have a mixed array of ide and sata drives? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The HD that is giving me the problem is a 160 gig Maxtor drive.

I have to agree - I think people would be happy to help but don't understand what's going on with all the '3-drive array' and primary/secondary/master/slave channel disabling. Are you saying that you have 2 SATA drives plugged in on a 2-drive RAID configuration but want the 3rd IDE drive to be available but it doesn't work ?

Thanks for the reply. No, I have a 3 drive array, consisting of two (2) Sata drives, and one (1) ide drive connected to the primarry ide channel. My problem, is that when I attempt to connect a fourth (4th) drive to the system (not part of the array), REGARDLESS of WHICH CHANNEL IT IS CONNECTED TO AND I HAVE VERIFIED THAT IT IS JUMPERED CORRECTLY AND HAVE DISABLED AND ENABLED THE REQUIRED SETTINGS IN THE BIOS CONCERNING IDE RAID, It causes the IDE DRIVE IN THE ARRAY TO DISAPPEAR. The result is an error in the array, and non-functionality of my system.

I hope I clarified my problem a little...

Just as a general statement, I'm fairly certain that you can't have two SATA hard drives and an IDE hard drive all in the same array. A friend tried this a while back, he was trying to create an array of a SATA hard drive and an IDE hard drive; he was wanting to mirror the hard drives.

Did he create the array? Yes. Did it work? Yes, but it caused him many problems, so much so that he purchased another SATA hard drive and successfully created the array with the SATA drives.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate the comment, but I have not had any problems with my current raid array in the current configuration itself, and I've been running it for over 8 months. This is the first problem I have run into in 8 months of running this particular array. It would be more helpful if anyone can verify weather or not this is indeed a bug related to ide raid, the raid bios, motherboard bios or otherwise.

Thanks

I run 3 drives 2 WD sata raid0 and a 120 gb ide storage drive no problems for almost a year now.Are you wanting to run raid 1 or 0+1 with your fourth drive?

Under the raid setup i use striping and in the bios I enable the master ide but only the sata drives and it works fine for me.
