Nero.Jacinth Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 I am going to be building a new computer in December and I would like some input. Here is the list of parts and I am just wondering if I could do better or if there are any problems. Lite-On Combo Drive NEC DVD Burner WD 80GB Sata-150 WD 200GB Sata-150 DFI NF4 Ultra-Infinity Sapphire 100122 Radeon X700 256MB Enermax NoiseTaker 485W OCZ DDR500 2 x 512MB (OCZ5001024ELDCGEVX-K) AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice Windows XP Pro w/SP2 My limit is $1200, and all of the above equals $1000.50 including shipping. So I could upgrade a few items, but I don't know what. Possibly the memory or graphics card. I will be doing very light gaming, and a bunch of multi-tasking. Any input is very appreciated. Also, I am wondering how the mobo is, performance and stability-wise. I will be overclocking to maybe 2.6 at the max.
Dave_Sz Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 I'm guessing you already have a LCD monitor at home since I don't see one on the list? What will the PC be mostly used for? I'd suggest a better video card, x800pro, if you're actually buying WINDOWS XP, get the home edition if it's cheaper than pro. Pro isn't really much different, moe for business use. You'll need a heatsink for the CPU, thermalright xp-90 with a good flowing fan, memory I'd suggest a 2gb kit over the kit you want, memory overclocking isn't really a big perfomance gain so you might as well get double the ram for $220, g.skil 2gbzx kit. Board, i'd suggest the dfi nf4 ultra d, not the infinity.
Nero.Jacinth Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 I will be using the computer for a little bit of gaming, really not much at all (Fable, Elder Scrolls, Diablo, EVE, ETC.), and quite a bit of multi-tasking (Video editing, audio conversion, video conversion, burning, ETC.). As for the video card, I don't need anything really great, I just want to be able to play some games on regular quality (my MX400 is almost good enough for me, that tells you a little bit about what I want). The CPU comes with a heatsink, but I might get an aftermarket one for better cooling, suggestions would be nice. And I am actually going to be taking Dave_SZ's advice on the memory and mobo. Thanks for the quick advice.
Nero.Jacinth Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 I forgot to put this but, I have a 17" CRT that I am going to be using (it is crap, but I don't want to spend 250 for an LCD.
Razorback Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 For multitasking perhaps a dual cpu would work better depending upon the load your going to put on it? Your choice is: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice ( price is $152.00 USD ) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819103535 Multitasking cpu: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ ( price is $322.00 USD ) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819103562 Price difference of: $170.00 USD Just another thing to consider depending upon what your going to be using the pc primarily for. Shopping around is also fun.

Angry_Games Posted November 6, 2005 Posted November 6, 2005 and a bunch of multi-tasking either the 3800+ X2 dual core (cheapest Athlon64 dual core) or forget AMD and get a decent Pentium4 Northwood socket478 or the newer Pentium4 LGA775 *you said a little gaming...and P4's can still game...but Hyperthreaded p4's are cheaper on average than the cheapest dual-core A64*
