Greetings, DFI newbie here with parts on order

I've been contemplating my upgrade purchase for a few months now, and one of the deciding factors going with DFI instead of the stiff competition is this friendly and helpful looking forum which certainly is a cut above the support offered from other companies.

It's not often I get to upgrade, and not often I have available funds, but this time I decided to go all out. Hopefully I chose wisely and everything will be compatible.

The rig will be used mainly for my home studio for writing music, as well as for the occasional game of BF2.

I have no previous experience with AMD systems so I have alot to learn about overclocking this beast, but discovering all the board's options and nuances is something I'm really looking forward to. On the other hand, the performance is going to be such a step up from what I'm using now that I'll probably just let it run at stock speeds for the 1st month or so to let it soak in and make sure everything's smooth and stable before I start tweaking.

I'm now off to try and read as much of the sticky information as I can while I'm waiting for the parts to arrive.

If you'd care to share any suggestions or experiences I'd love to hear em,

Arman

Altho I'm not new to building pc's it had taken me about 2 months to get all my choices chosen and I will OC my pc mildly. It is much better to have high quality parts to start out with so ( if ) you have problems down the road it is easier to isolate them. I'm on my ummm lost count... pc since 83 and I have enjoyed the journey.

I think this forum will be a boon to my tweaking under the pc hood... The pc in my signature is replacing my current pc that only has the cpu fan working in the whole case w/ a 9" oscillating fan sitting there to assist in trying to cool the innards and only 1 of the 4 dimms work anymore and.... well you get the idea. The 5+ yo pc is about ready to hit the scrap pile minus a few, very few salvage parts.

I'll try and offer advice where and when I can and hopefully come up with a solution to the never ending tweakitis that some of us have.

Best regards,

*** SNIP ***

Zalman CNPS9500 LED cpu fan ... very heavy & very tall & top heavy

From Zalmans webpage: "The maximum weight for a cooler is specified as 450g for Intel Socket 775 and AMD Socket 754/939/940" This cooler weighs 530g yes slightly over the recommended spec ( 'IF' it weighed 550-600g and since it will be in a horizontal position on a vertical board I would have passed on it and got something that sat closer to the cpu such as the Zalman CNPS7700-Cu. <-- by the way that weighs 918g :eek2:

Over the long term I will let ya'll know if their are any negative issues with this configuration.

2x 1024 x2 dual pack mushkin eXtreme Performance Samsung K4H510838C-UCCC XP4000 BrainPower PCB ram modules ... is this recommended?

While normally most people and companies recommend 256mb / 512mb or 1gb sticks or more popularly a 2GB dual pack due to os & performance issues. I see absolutely no reason that what I have chosen would not work well in a mild overclock system and working with several very large multimedia encoding/decoding files and background process configurations but hey it's only $$$ and if I can get the mobo and WinXP to properly work together with the ram sticks everything will be fine. I will keep you posted. To specifically answer your question is I have read where others have used a 2gb dual pack with success I just would like to try to max out the ram and see what timings I can get away with a mild overclock  I didn't specifically see these as recommended ram on either the DFI or mushkin webpages.

2x eVGA e-GeForce 7800 GTX KO in SLI 256-P2-N529-AX video cards ... WoW

I was actually VERY lucky to be able to find these at newegg before they stopped offering them. I really don't have any idea why they decided to stop offering these cards.

Seasonic S12-600w psu ... I hope you get ver A02, but I wish you had a PC P&C 510 ASL

Good Luck,

Dave ;)

From what I have been reading here about the SeaSonic psu I certianly hope that I have no problems and will cross my fingers should I run into a problem and will inform the forum as such. I looked at the following psu candidates: Noisetaker Noisetaker 600w, Silverstone ST65ZF, Turbo-Cool 510 ASL, and Turbo-Cool 850 SSI ( all good psu's ) but the potential noise and cost factors of all the components were beginning to add up so compromises were made and we will see what happens. FYI the SeaSonic psu I have is: Rev. A2

Where did you find the GTX KO's? I have been looking everywhere for them and cant seem to find them anywhere...

They were at newegg for about 2 months prior to about 1-2 weeks ago when they decided to stop offering them. I have absolutly no idea why they are so hard to find.
