Raphie Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Forget all the negative feedback and give this great firewall a new chance. Below is what i did: - Brand new install of Windows XP Pro - In first Windows boot install Nforce 6.70 first thing (after reboot firewall goes live) - Use Internet Explorer for Windows Update (all drivers patches available, be aware that NVIDIA firewall will ask to reboot because windows changed some drivers, you must allow this to happen and the fist reboot wil take approx 2 to 3 minutes to fully reconfigure) - In Security Center set Nvidia as default firewall - Install Forceware drivers (i used 81.87) - Install and start all your internet apps 1 by 1, Nvidia firewall will pop up and you can deny or allow. - Use the shortcut in the start menu to enter the Web Interface, again first start is slow but it gets faster and faster all the time. Why is this firewall so cool: - It's Secure NOTHING get's past without your permission (from APPLE Bonjour services till SVhost, they all need YOUR permission  - It's FAST and i mean FAST! less lag in your internet connection, P2P and Torrents download faster. - Local host webinterface (like hardware firewall running Apache) - Saves resources Also the web interface contains Wizards, for Workgroup Networking and other applications and these work flawlessly as well. No BSOD so far, no apps hanging, no apps slipping through without me allowing it. This is GOOD STUFF!
3 Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 I just use my router which has a hardware firewall, and have all software firewalls disabled (including the windows firewall).
Raphie Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 I use both, my Hardware firewall is a Symantec 360R Appliance with VPN, i am more concerned about mallware / hacking / Trojans, hence i also use a personal firewall for monitoring outbound. Nvidia does this a lot better than the windows firewall
Otter Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 I like it so far too, Ralphie, though I wish there was a way to tell it to not automatically permit outbound traffic just because it recognizes the ap. Given microsofts penchant for releasting gloriously insecure code, I'd prefer to make these decisions myself.
Raphie Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 you, can, just 1 of the empty profiles. also don't work from an Admin account, (or even better, you can also give family members a limited account) this way you don't have even acces to the webinterface  , this FW is excellent for a controll freak like me, Read the PDF, it tells you all about it, And if it's not for security reasons, then do it for permonce reasons, since you configure your NIC properties from the same interface :shake: so you finally can let your little sister have a surfing session witohut your PC being messed up by all kinds off AddWare / Mallware

Look @ advanced configuration > IAM (Intelligent Application Manager) configuration, OFF and your problem is sorted
AFTERBURN321 Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 With all due respect. Nvidia firewall is a gigantic steaming pile of crap. Realistically you only need 1 firewall and some form of virus protection. Anything beyond that is a little overkill if you ask me. Never hurts to be too safe, but come on. I know I am not alone here, but it's an inconvenience to even be prompted with permission requests. It can be handy, but for the most part. Any infections or failures. Nothing a clean install of Windows can't fix. Glad you enjoy, but I will pass on it.
Raphie Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 So it's not crap then, it's just overkill for your peace of mind
Otter Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Look @ advanced configuration > IAM (Intelligent Application Manager) configuration, OFF and your problem is sorted Thanks Ralphie, but it looks like if I turn that off, the firewall becomes unaware of anything at the application level. You mean firewall>advanced configuration>application>IAM, right? Is there a way to just turn off just the automatic pass for recognized aps? Some of us have sensitive data and paswords that we cannot afford to give to any script kiddie that manages to upload a trojan. And if you use your machine for work of any kind, a virus could be expensively disruptive. But to each his own.
Liquidfire Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 hmm, so is it safe to install the firewall without a fresh windows install? im kinda interested in the NVfirewall, but am hesitant with all the horror stories.
Geebs Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 Thanks Ralphie, but it looks like if I turn that off, the firewall becomes unaware of anything at the application level. You mean firewall>advanced configuration>application>IAM, right? Is there a way to just turn off just the automatic pass for recognized aps? Look in the firwall application page and set any programs that you dont want to access the net to "deny and dont ask", then click apply. Yes, you also want to turn off IAM. I have used the nv firewall since the day i got the board. I can honestly say it is fantastic. I have only had one problem where started corrupting my downloads for no apparent reason. I temporarily fixed this by setting "not offloadable" in the web interface. As soon as new beta drivers came out, I installed them, and haven't had a bit of trouble since. I like it so much that I set my router to passthrough so thye nv firewall can do all the work, as well as ask my permission for EVERYTHING! I likes it!
