chrism778 Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 I recently put together a new PC using an Athlon 4400+ overclocked to 2.65 GHz. I upped my CPU core to 1.47 V. My CPU has the retail heatsink on it. The thing I'm wondering about is how hot should the CPU get when running under load for a long period of time? Right now it maxes out at about 51C, but the CPU fan is loud (at 5200+ RPMs) when it's doing this. Is having the CPU fan running fast when you're playing games typical, or is it because my heatsink is no good? Should I raise the the temperature when the fan speeds up so it isn't loud so often? lowboy Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 After all the money you spent on your rig. Why the stock HS when your overclocking a $600.00 CPU buy sure self a better HS like a Thermalright XP90C under $50.00 at jab-tech and a good 90-92mm fan . Or the xp90 or si120 HS. Because I read that I can overclock with the stock fan. And I did. But I'm wondering if the price I'm paying is a high RPM fan which is loud. If I get a better fan and it's just as loud, but maybe will let me overclock higher--big deal, I'm happy with my current overclocking. I just don't like hearing the thing rev up everytime the CPU goes under load. So will a better fan not rev up as much, or maybe do it quieter? Also, is it possible to replace a CPU fan once one has already been attached?
ether.real Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 bigger fan=better cooling=less RPMs=less noise. So yes, an XP-90 with a 92mm Panaflo would do you some good.

ether.real Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 you replace the whole heatsink. Buy some arctic silver 5, and follow the instructions on their website. http://www.arcticsilver.com/

Panaflo 92mm, 68CFM is best for OC cooling, but get a fan controller, too. You always want to be under 50C at load.
HITandRUN Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Yup! Like the guys say, heat is your worst enemy! You can always overclock with stock parts! The question is for how long? :shake: You should also have a fan control unit and plug all you fans to that thing instead into the mobo! That will give more stability to the mobo! chrism778 Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Should I get the XP-90 or the XP-120? Does anyone have links to reviews comparing the two? And what DBA level starts to become audible?
chrism778 Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Here's what I plan on ordering: http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/ThermalRigh...0C-p-16133.html http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/shop/produc...54&cat=0&page=1 I'm not sure which fan to order out of the following: http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/Nexus-92mm-...-3-p-16284.html http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/Panaflo-92m...BX-p-16196.html If I get a Panaflo, should I get the low, med, or high output one? Do the Panaflo fans come with the appropriate adapters/wires required to have the motherboard adjust the speed of the fan or do I even need this? The Nexus one sounds like it comes with this, but I'm not sure. Is there anything else I need?
chrism778 Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 Actually, I changed my mind, and am going with the XP-120. Just not sure which fan to get: Panaflo 120mm low, med, high.
ether.real Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 go high, and use the onboard fan controller. That way fan speed scales to temp.
