icypinoy Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 its me once again sorry to bombard all of you with questions, but figure its best before i make a bad decision. im getting ready to setup a wireless network around my house. i am planning to go linksys. i was gonna go full force with a WRT54 G network. i plan on gaming with the connection. my friend suggested not to waste the money and go straight for the B network, saying the only difference will be my file transfer from computer to computer. i did however read somewhere (i forgot where) of someone complaining of packet loss etc from the B network. I personally havent dealt with any wireless networks so I would like to know people's opinions/suggestions. any help would be greatly appreciated. sorry...bear with me <_
d3bruts1d Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 http://linksys.com/edu/wirelessstandards.asp If it were me, and for some reason I went wireless (like hell froze over) I'd go with G.
O(V)eGA_l2el) Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 What I do know is that G networks are more stable, faster and reliable than B networks
Guest FxXP Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 I still don't trust wireless networks yet. Still too many security loopholes in that technology yet there is nothing wrong with G's 54Mbps speeds compared to B's 11MBps. andrusk Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 i have the wrt54g and i have to tell ya. I love it! Sure its not the most secure thing on the planet, but theres nothing like lounging around your house with a laptop that has a 54mb connection to your lan! Besides, they just came out with a new security protocol thats suppose to be a lot better then wep, besides if you implament two or three different wireless security measures you shouldnt worry that much. Just remember to make your access passwords as complicated as possible and always use mac address filtering.
icypinoy Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 (edited) thank you all. as much as i dont want to go wireless i dont know how else to setup in my house. everyone wants to have access to the dsl. it would be difficult to wire from upstairs to downstairs. maybe i should switch to cable hahaha. hmm. gotta think of a good setup here so everyone can be happy. updated edit: oh by the way 'andrusk'. like i said itll be from upstairs to downstairs. two fairly thin walls in between (my bedroom wall - wide open space -parents bedroom wall). not exactly sure how many feet away but doesnt seem very far. think itll recieve okay? once again sorry for being so persistent lol Edited August 5, 2003 by icypinoy

Anyway, I think the reception shoud be fine, as long as your using a good wireless card in your laptop or computer. The companion card that linksys makes is pretty good quality and gets pretty good reception. But be wary of laptops that have built in wireless cards, i have a laptop with a built in wireless card and it is a piece of crap! Other than that though i dont think youll have a problem with reception in your house. I mean heck, I have a little bit of a problem with reception, but this house is coated with aluminum siding and has thick concrete walls, and i still get decent enough reception that it doesnt bother me. I dont think youll have a problem, good luck with your wlan!

JeepGC96ZJ Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 Wireless is the way to go for laptop users. Or regular users. There are not that many security issues. IF you have the WEP enabled you will be fine. No one will get on your network and for those people that can has much better things to be doing. If your planning to play games on it.. I dont. Never really tried. I keep my Main PC hard lined into my Access Point and use the wireless for other stuff with laptops. How is the gameing on wireless? Some one fill me in.... I would go Wireless G. I have the B and already want the G becasue faster....and mroe reliable. Jeep
andrusk Posted August 5, 2003 Posted August 5, 2003 How is the gameing on wireless? Some one fill me in.... Gaming is fine. Its just like your playing on a regualr network. 11 mbs, or even 54 mbs even way more than enough to have an enjoyable gameing experience. Its when you start to transfer files from one comp to another that you start to notice it.
frosstbyt3 Posted August 28, 2003 Posted August 28, 2003 I own the WRT54G and I have no problems; and that new WPA - Wi-fi Protected Access was easy to setup...This router rocks, and the gaming....no probs...
